Driver Training at Firebird

Took Old SPF667 to Firebird Raceway Saturday, first for driving lessons sponsered by NASA (North American Sportsracing Assoc) then to the West Track. 1.8 miles with a straight of about .5miles. Winding short course. What an experience. I never knew how fast this SPF could take a corner. It hung like in a slot. I was a mad man out there. Spun out twice but stayed on the pavement and near lost several times. On the Edge! No racing, just driving around beating up on corvettes, S2000, a small, flat can-am looking car, and 2 other cobras.
Another case of a great car drivern by a not-so-great driver, but fun! I may do it again. Stayed with the smaller cars on corners (except the flat one), but pulled away a great deal on the straight, even from the vettes. (both C-6 one was a ZO6).
I'm waiting for the call now from Team Ferrari. Yup, ready to give up my day job.
I never realized the bruising on the legs trying to hold your body straight, cramping hands, sliding forward on braking, headache from holding head straight with helmet on etc. Not all easy. I see more in the future.
Second day of laps with more cars was to be today, but rained a lot. I refuse to take the cobra out in the rain.
I'm sure Mike Canning will say the same. yup, mad man Mike!
Also Jerry Nance need a bigger helmet after all the lead driving he did! John Hart tried to give me a lesson but couldn't get around the S2000 so he could pass me. (straight passing only, with permission from passee). Wade Gutherie was his usual dominant ddriving self. Boy his car sounds great! I wonder if Team Ferrari has called him yet?
Hershall stopped by as did Ron and his new SPF. There were 2 more cobras there, Mike and Ron, great looking cars. Gordon was there looking to drive something that wasn't broken like his GT40.
Will try again when the weather is warmer.

Bob, sounds like you are hooked. I drove on friday with nasa, the big track. I took my dad for his first ride on the track and also my brother in law, had a great time passing everything. Jan 4, 5, and 6 is the next event. so, what did you learn? scott

Yup, it was fun....
On Saturday we had 10 cobras there..2 on the main track 8 on the west more technical track. 7 of the 8 ran. It was great.

Bob was like a crazy man....He passed me on the straight then as he was going into the turn I found my self looking at his headlights then tail lights....oops...

It was tougher for me to find the line around the track. Consequently I was going much slower than Bob. But, had fun and learned the cobra is capable of more than I am.

Sunday I left and went to the track, no car, it was pouring at the house. The track however, was dry and not many cars out there. Kicked my self for not braving the rain. Jerry, Jim and Wade were on the track most of the day. Jerry is now called Mr.Tornado. Some how he caused a large cloud of dust to fly at the end of the straight ....

While I will not be joining CLUB CRANKY any time soon I will go out again.

Mike

P.S. Ginny will take the school in the spring.
