Question re: Oil capacity

What is the proper oil capacity for a 302 with a dual sump, including filter. I used 5 quarts and the dipstick shows a quart over. Is the dipstick wrong or am I the "dipstick" ? (Don't answer that Mike!)

Rick Parker 03-25-2014 11:48 PM

5 Qt incl Full size FL1 filter.

Dwight 03-26-2014 06:48 AM

add five qt and crank the motor let it run a minute or so. Shut it down and wait ten mintues. Re-mark the dipstick.

I've seen dipsticks off by 1 3/4 qts on FEs. To much oil.

Oops.

mikiec 03-26-2014 07:29 PM

We talked about this already. Drain the oil out. Drive for a week, that will use up any remaining oil in the engine. Add one quart at a time. When you have dumped 5qts in your done. As stated, then mark the stick.

Send the 200.00 to Bruce.

I like to mark the dipstick when the motor is upside down on an engine stand........mark just below the crank throw ............when its running there will be a quart or more in the top of the engine.....

Fitz 03-27-2014 10:35 AM

When adding the oil make sure you have the plug screwed back in?%/ can never ask a serious question on here for us less-motorized motor heads.

Boy, we need to read this solution again!! Along with all the other AZ Cobra inputs...or is that "inputzs"? Thanks to the other "nice" members.

And lastly, send mickic the bill for the new engine. Having been run for a week without oil (:

mikiec 03-28-2014 02:33 PM

I have more bills than I can pay. I'll add his to that pile.

mikiec 03-28-2014 02:35 PM

Chanmadd: "I like to mark the dipstick when the motor is upside down on an engine stand........mark just below the crank throw ............when its running there will be a quart or more in the top of the engine....."

This really had me scratching my head then it dawned on me that maybe the engines you work on have the dip stick tube mounted through the block. I'm most familiar with Chevies and their sticks are mounted through the oil pan. It would be impossible to see where the stick reaches with the pan resting on the underside of the up-side-down block. I've had only a few Chevy engines torn apart, over 'way too many decades, but I think I have a fairly good idea of how they are engineered. Both the good and the bad things. Thanks for making me think.

Gofastoldguy 03-28-2014 10:20 PM

Jesus...what did I start?

Danr55 03-30-2014 01:32 PM

With Karl, it's not the number of engines he's taken down, it's the number of times he's taken down this engine/car. It's almost a career... Hi hero..

Karl Bebout 03-30-2014 08:41 PM

Oh Danr: "With Karl, it's not the number of engines he's taken down, it's the number of times he's taken down this engine/car. It's almost a career'

What chew talkin 'bout? This engine went away only once, after 27K miles, and then only from something battering around on top of some pistons. All the other down time was due to an operator error or taking the car four-wheeling, not engine parts breaking or failing, like SOME PEOPLE's car...

What chu talk in about? Chu tryin to say sumtin?
