High voltage???

I had to install a new alternator because the old one was dead in car and on tester at parts shop.
Now I think I'm getting to much voltage.
With the rpms above 2000 or so I get 15 volts with nothing on.
I put 2 new voltage regs on so far with the same 15 volts.
If I run the fan and head lights I get 13 volts so that's what I have been doing.
I checked all connections and ran a ground from the volt reg and I still get 15 volts.

Is 15 volts a problem?
Checked with dash gauge and hand held volt meter.

Mine charges at a steady 14.5 volts across a meter. I don't think 15V is anything to be concerned about.

Where are you seeing 15 volts, from thr alternator or at the battery?

mikiec 06-06-2014 10:01 PM

Is the battery fully charged? Are you looking at the dash meter? Have you checked at the battery with a good gauge.

DWRAT 06-06-2014 10:45 PM

I'm checking with a multi-meter at the battery and I get the same reading on the dash.
Battery is reading 12.7-12.8 with the car off so I think the battery is fully charged.
All high readings is above 2k rpms or so.

That sounds good. I always worry about low voltage with lights, air, two blade fans and small fans pulling air out of trunk. God help me if I turn on the radio!?;);)

Voltage

My new one-wire alternator puts out 13.8V without accessories on and 12.8V with headlights, etc on. Running Autometer volt gauge. I wouldn't worry about your voltage.

How did you get a 1 wire alt to wire up?

Texasdoc 06-07-2014 06:30 AM

I have 12.6 volts with the car off. 15 volts with the car running. Drops to 14.5 volts when the radiator fan turns on. 100am - 1G (3 wire) alternator with external regulator.

Never had a battery or electrical problem, but I routinely keep it on a Battery Tender when not being driven.

A no load voltage of 13.5 to 15.0 volts is considered normal.

A one wire alternator connects directly to a battery source.

vector1 06-07-2014 07:42 AM

I get 15 volts while running with a 1 wire, haven't noticed any problems. Unlike the 3 wire, the 1 wire will discharge the battery if left connected.

mikiec 06-07-2014 07:58 AM

There you go.... Your good.

DWRAT 06-07-2014 08:49 AM

Thanks everyone, I will consider it good and stick with the 3 wire.

vatdevil 06-08-2014 05:46 AM

15+ volts on the dash mounted voltmeter. 1 wire setup. With everything turned on, 13+ volts.
