Friday Night Drags

Greetings.

I am thinking of taking Carmen to the drags this Friday night at WildHorse Raceway. I will confirm by Thursday.

Weather seems about perfect, I think I have everything dialed in on Carmen, I won't run her hard until I feel it's appropriate.

One question, has anyone every ran 1/4 mile on BillBoards? They stick on the road tracks well.......

Hope to see some smiling faces

Don't get your feelings hurt if your car doesn't go nearly as quickly as you think. Have big fun.

Good luck there Chandler Dave. NHRA rules require helmet, long sleeve shirt and long pants. Also you can't go under 14.0 seconds. In the past cobras simply weren't allowed. We tried. Hope things have changed. Better call ahead.
Here are requirements:

Thanks,

I have all the safety stuff and I have the rule book. I have a call into the track.

Karl, I don't plan on running all that fast. So I have no expectations.

I will let everyone know what the track says.

My last time out there they said I need a fire jacket.
To many rules.

I spoke to Paul at WildHorse about cobra replicas. He said to take it to tech inspection, if it passes, I can run. Sounds like any other car looking to run.

Karl Bebout 03-24-2015 05:24 PM

It'll all depend on the guy you catch on the tech line. I've had them require a full face helmet, some not, some required arm restraints, some wanted SFI numbers from flywheel and harmonic balancer, They all checked safety harness dates, helmet dates, and neutral safety switch and external battery cut off. The requirements are more stringent for an open car and of course, the quicker/faster you go, the more requlations.
I've even heard of some people getting thrown off the track for going too fast....

Yup... Depends on how strict the track is and how fast you are running. We got thrown out of New England Dragway in NH, Atco in NJ and Cecil County in Md. Then the wife got involved. "Slow the car down or make it legal." :D No way were we goin to slow it down !! Fixed it a few winters ago.

Fast289 03-24-2015 05:42 PM

I blame lawyers!

mikiec 03-24-2015 07:47 PM

I understand the need for rules. We were lucky to be able to run at the old SpeedWorld. Just keep it over 12.99 and good to go. They checked helmets, seatbelts etc. But nothing like firebird.

One thing though, Everyone says get the racing off the streets, so guys take it to the track and then are not allowed to run, so they go back on the street. Catch 22.

Karl got Jeff thrown off after a second 10 second run.

Tracks like Firebird are used to hosting NHRA drags on a national level. Therefore, they are used to the strict safety rules. After all, they are there for the drivers safety as well as the fans watching in the stands. If you don't pass you can always come to the ProAuto sports that uses Firebird and go as fast as you want. I know you know this but just a reminder, April 18 is my next target date.

Mesa MiKe,

I am planning on being at Pro Auto April 18 and 19. I might be ducking in and out to coach soccer.

I didn't make the drags, life got in the way again....

See you at the track.

An over zealous tech inspector can make your life hell. In another life I ran in advanced ET classes with very strict and expensive certifications. Have sworn at crazy or seemingly vendor/manufacturer cash flow driven standards. Although I knew the car in the lane beside me had the same clutch can and couple shields etc.. The other driver hoped I had lots of seat time and would stay in my own lane.

Missed you at Inde Saturday Dave. Had a great day and weather was perfect!

Did you make it?
How did tech inspection go?
Care to share any times?

Fast289 03-30-2015 02:51 PM

I didn't make it last Friday. Work called and I jumped! When I do go, I will let everyone know how it went.

Thanks for asking.
