No Fly Zone in 2016?
Pete and Jan told us about this race they took part in on March 7th on a runway in Gila Bend with their Viper.
No Fly Zone Arizona Booked for Saturday! Omega Motorsports Expands March Event in the Bend into Sunday - Arizona Auto Scene Pete showed me his speed trap results, over 160mph and he had some great stories about other cars. I wonder how our cobras would do, or perhaps my Mustang? I would worry about the cobra liftoff speed. I'll keep an eye out for next year. If you read this Pete, tell us more like how much, when, observing, classes and next year. AZ Bob |
Bob, my company has a plant in Gila Bend, they said they heard the cars and some of the cars actually raced planes.
On another note, it sold out very fast..... |
Rolling 1/2 Mile Race Wars
Perhaps I can participate with the GT500.
On March 7 and 8 this year was the No Fly Zone at the Gila Bend Airport. A rolling 1/2 mile, top speed event. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBMC3-_I9i4[/ame] Here's another 1/2 mile event happening April 18th (Next Saturday) at the same Gila Bend Airport: Race Wars Az (Events) or Gila Bend: Race Wars Arizona - Best Events $150 now or $180 race day to run. Got other comitment that day. Maybe next time. AZ Bob |
Hey Bob and all, just saw this. Cost was $200 for as many runs as you care to take. Well run event, very safe, no drama, and they took safety seriously but despite that everyone seemed to have great fun, I certainly did.
As someone said they sold out the initial Saturday very quickly. I got put on the wait list and when they decided to add Sunday I was able to get in. I observed Saturday and ran only Sunday. Sat they had > 200 cars, so at least in the morning from 9 to noon there was some delay between runs as you were waiting in line. But Sunday morning there were only around 50-60 cars and essentially zero waiting between runs. By 10:30 you could run, get back in line and run again almost immediately. I got a dozen runs in and bugged out for home just before noon. You can see the setup for observation in the image above. You can sit along the launch area. You cant sit down at the speed trap end of the run, for safety reasons. Visibility was good enough though so you dont get a sense of missing out on anything. You can easily tell who is fast by seeing and hearing the launches. They have a couple large readouts and put the times for every run up on those for all to see. I dont know exact schedule but I believe they plan to be back for more of this in the fall and again next spring. I had a huge blast and will def run again. Getting headers and modified exhaust soon so the Viper will breathe better, hoping to flirt with 170 next time. |
Thanks Pete. I will keep an eye out. Would like to run my Mustang with 550 rwhp. As you may know there is another group running next Saturday at the same place. Posted above.

When you run the GT have a GoPro in the car.

Would be great to run the Mustang Bob, and a pretty fair match against a stock Viper I would think. I cant make the run this weekend either, so looking forward to the next one. I'll post to CC if/when I hear anything about next event.
BTW I would think the crowd would LOVE to see Cobras run, regardless performance. I know I would. But it is pretty brutal with the aggressive launch. That said it's fun to feel your organs sliding around inside your chest at takeoff, have to consider what that exhilaration is worth! Any car with > 400 HP is strong enough to run... |
A friend did the event in his beefed up ZR1 Vette street car. Did 213+ in a 1.5 mile run.
|
How fast will out cars go?
|
I can probably coax 170 or so out of your car.

Pete's 160+ is looking real good in comparison. Amazing! Specially the GTR AZ Bob |
Maybe next time they'll take the rev limiter off the Kawasaki. ha
6 cyl Datsun 208 MPH WOW! |
200mph is chump change now days, easily achieved with many different engines and power adders, my stock bww diesel did 180mph...actually I tuned it to remove the speed limiter set at 155mph...

The yellow twin turbo ford GT we seen last Saturday evening at Pavillions did 266mph according to a Google search I did on it.
|
RatBoy, how long was the track for the GT?

love to see the Bugatti at 1 mile vs 1/2. But yeah, the bike, and the rider too, are bad ass.
