Leadership
This reason this “Club” has lasted 15+ years is we have no formal structure, rules, dues, meetings, officers, etc. We DO have responsible people who manage events all year long and fun people who want spontaneous “runs.”
The word “President” only works for one person, Mike Canning, our founder. Yes, I was there, but, he was the driving force. We have through the years attempted to establish repeatable events that could be managed by different individuals without our assistance. Such as:
New Years Day Run / Spring Tucson trip in March
Picnic in early April / California Trip (Knottsberry, now FFR) in late April
Route 66 Fun Run in early May / Independence Day in the pines
Run to the Pines in early September / Coronado Trail Run in early October
Club Sandwich/Kit Cars on the CO late October / Anniversary Party in December
We have had “race dates” at Speedworld, Tucson, all 3 WHP tracks and PIR. We have had members at IMR, AMP, St John’s and auto cross. We can join them anytime.
As a “gang” we do not suffer liability outside of the individual, thus, do not need special club papers or insurance.
I’ve been in car clubs with structure that didn’t last because the same people still do all the work. When they step down the vacuum created doesn’t get filled so the club folds. The offices and responsibilities are ALWAYS someone else’s job. Someone ELSE will step in, I’m TOO busy. Our best approach is to let someone be in charge of each function or event (if they want) and let them run with it.
Now, if a group decided to organize a “club” I will not stand in the way but, good luck. Cobra owners are "type A" people. Like herding cats, each will have their own direction. Most cobras are garage art.
We all want new, younger blood and we will always have significant input from experienced members, I hope.
All of this can be boiled down to few words. Leave well enough alone, it works.
My 2 cents. Sorry for the rant.
