Opps, sure sounds like a Corvette.

No, it doesn't sound like a Corvette- It sounds like a Ford 302.

If it had a BBC, and a gold ghost bowtie painted into the nose, THEN it would sound like a Corvette...

Power seats and windows...? Now you're just being ridiculous. ;)

Karl - If you decide to go that route, I could let you have $2500 for your ERA...

I'd bet someone has pwr. Window and seats. Maybe even locks or latches. Bing is da thing for some people, just not for me. My rookie stripes and my four Webers are pretty much the extent of my blingz. Unless you count the outstanding styling of a 289FIA.

Cobrakeith 09-10-2016 12:42 PM

Bling on Karl, Bling on LOL.

Danr55 09-10-2016 12:53 PM

Don't forget the perfect head. That's a lot of bling.

Well guys after getting the ball rolling here I am afraid I am going to be bailing out on the run tomorrow. Took the car down to get gas and when I started it back up after the fill up the engine bogged down and died - when I try to crank it the starter won't turn. I think the pinion engaged the flywheel and then failed to disengage and I burned up the starter.

No chance of getting it changed out tonight

Sorry about this. Guess my car is just not fully sorted out yet.

Mike

moore_rb 09-10-2016 06:57 PM

That totally blows, Mike... hope it's not a mega-huge issue.

I'm still going, will be at the FH Shell station about 5:50 to fuel up, then off to meet the Bush Highway off-ramp crowd.

Phx Mike 09-10-2016 07:20 PM

Me too - either a locked up starter motor or a locked up big motor. Hope it's the first one.

Karl Bebout 09-10-2016 09:21 PM

Phx Mike, have you been taking lessons from Danr? Can't tell you how many things he he has gotten people all cranked up for and then bailed out at the last minute. Fortunately, he's now retired, for the second time and so far, he hasn't been able break his current FE.
Hope your problem is only the starter. Yours would not be the first new car to have ugly problems.

Danr55 09-11-2016 04:18 AM

Thanks for the vote of confidence Karlos. I guess the truth sometimes hurts. Mike, I hope it is something minor. See the rest of you on the Beeline.

Don't you sleep ? A 3 am posting. I guess you were up late working on your car !

Pissed so far away.......Looks like a great morning....

Phx Mike 09-11-2016 01:10 PM

It looks like it was a great day. I am so pissed. I gave my car the finger this am. Still won't crank though.

Danr55 09-11-2016 01:29 PM

Robert, well labeled and defined. Mike, try a foot in the butt then check to be sure your battery is connected.

Karl Bebout 09-11-2016 01:50 PM

Mike, if you are lucky, you could have a loose or faulty ground, maybe a faulty neutral safety switch? Does the starter drive (Bendix) kick in? Did you try shorting across the solenoid terminals? (i and +)
I'm just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. Do you have an electric fuel pump? If so, can you hear it kick in when you turn on the key? What, if any sound does the car make when you try to start it?

AZ Cobra Mike 09-11-2016 02:39 PM

Had a blast with you guys today. My first Cobra Run.

Feelin for ya Mike. I spent all day Saturday rewiring my tail lights. Got to bed at about 2300 hrs.

Appreciate the suggestions. Here is some additional info....car was running good down to the gas station and started fine after the fill up. The engine was running for about 30 seconds as I left the filling station then after I pulled out onto the road and stopped at the light it began to bog down (car was in gear with clutch disengaged). Idle slowly dropped down to about 600 rpm and then it died. Like it was under a load and stalled. Now when I turn the key to the accessory or run position I have 12 plus volts and fan/fuel pump etc run fine. But when I turn the key to the start position I just get an awful groaning sound - no cranking at all - like the starter cannot turn the engine. I don't hear the normal sound of the bendix (solenoid) kicking the pinion in/out either. No clicking like a dead/weak battery either. I crawled underneath but cannot tell if the starter pinion is engaged in the flywheel ring gear (i.e. stuck in the forward position) or not.

I have had starters before that would get hot and the insides would expand a bit and the solenoid would engage the pinion but not crank until it cooled off, but this is different....i don't hear the pinion engaging and cooling off did not help. When you turn the key to the run position there is just a horrible groan like the starter is trying to turn something it can't. No clunking of the solenoid in and out and no spinning.

There is no neutral safety switch. I thought about jumpering the solenoid while laying under the thing yesterday but I can't see the pinion anyway (frame and bell housing in the way).

So my guess is a) frozen starter motor (possibly due to the pinion jammed in the flywheel and can't disengage and starter was damaged) or b) the engine is locked up for some other reason. I suspect (a) because I don't hear the pinion thunking in/out when I turn the key and because the engine was running good with no issues (oil looks great, etc).

It will get its 3rd trip to the shop this week. I don't have time to play with it.

Karl Bebout 09-11-2016 05:12 PM

Phx Mike, you might try putting the tranny in gear and rocking the car to see if you can bump the bendix gear loose. Maybe you'll get lucky. Maybe rap on the starter with a hammer?
What shop are you using?

AZ Cobra Mike, glad you came out. Nice to meet you and Jamie. Get your room reserved for Coronado Trail Run. Plenty Big Fun!
