Tranny Confusion
Been looking for a 302 engine (I think I have one) and a tranny for a new project. I have found Ford motorsports racing, Tremec TKO II 3550, and this that and the other one. Some with bell housing, Chevy, hydraulic throwout, etc. What do you think I need?

I picked up a tranny by mistake one time.

????
Not sure what the question is exactly but I know what you DON'T need! An internal hydraulic throw out bearing. Most likely (typical of an FFR build) you will wind up with a cable actuated clutch with a typical T5 trans. You know the one that has the really high 5th gear overdrive which is totally ridiculous and you wind up leaving it in 4th 95% of the time anyway? Yeah, THAT tranny! |
Oinie, Bill is making a ferrari out of a datsun Z car. Normally you would use a SBC as there are plenty of conversion kits for that swap. Bill likes to be different, therefore a 302 motor.
Bill, Are you using the Datsun clutch system? You might check out what the chevy motor conversion was for the Z car and what they used for the clutch system. This should give you some idea of what you will need. You could then adapt it to work with the 302. Mike |
Hey that sounds like a fun project! The 5th over drive gear ratio problem still applies. The "stock" or more "typical" OD ratio used today is just to dam high to be worth much. Such a BIG drop in rpm from 4th to 5th, tends to "bog" a high perfromance engine and leads to problems in general.
Building the motor (cam selection mostly) to MATCH your selected cruising/performance gearing (rear/trans) is a BIG factor in getting the car "right". Choose wisely. :D |

Randy,
Don't let Pink fool you. He picks them up often. He got caught once by his wife. He is now more discrete. :3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: Mike |
