Question regarding Cobra registration in AZ
Hi all you AZ Club Folks,
I just ordered a Hurricane kit and want to know the "best" ins and outs of getting the car registered in AZ. I know I'll have to pay some sale taxs etc. but I what is the best route to go to reduce this charge as much as possible. What is the basic procedure to follow, and what will the MVD want to get through the process? Anyway, whatever info and advice you guys can provide me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill Bess..Lake Havasu City |
Hey Bill
I haven't gone through it but I know a few who have recently. I've been told that who you get at DMV has a lot to do with how easy the process is. Luck of the draw situation. I know the inspection for my brothers FFR wasn't much at all. The guy just walked around the car, didn't touch it at all and passed it. No wipers and it passed! In AZ, it will be titled as a 65 as far as I know, so no emissions inspections. There will be a tax based on the amount paid for the car unless taxes are paid at purchase. I'm not sure what % the tax is though and I heard of a local owner who didn't pay any tax when he registered the first time. Not sure how he got away with it but more power to him! Maybe someone closer to Lake Havasu can tell you the best DMV office to go to. When is your kit due to arrive? Larry |
Registration
Both my cards cost about $26.

Give Gordon Levy Racing a call. 520 494 2745 He has done this more than anyone.

Pretty easy - I went last month with a friend who borrowed my trailer. I don't know how they figured his tax, but it was less than we thought it would be. Took less than an hour, never took the car off the trailer. Level I inspection. Basically just paperwork. Show MSO, give a declared value, produce receipts for at least half that amount. I think he had receipts for everything, actually. They assign a VIN, sell you plates. Nice, efficient folks at Glendale. 1965 Ford on the title. I think there are only 3 places that do the inspections without an appointment. I know Glendale is one, and I think Mesa is another. You can call or check ADOT web site, but there are no numbers there for individual stations. If you need an appointment, you have to do it several days in advance. That's all I know.

Hey... Thanks Guys for your quick responces.
We have an MVD here in Lake Havasu and I know a friend who did his FFR there and he mentioned the sales tax and the no wiper requirement. I will make a few more contacts prior to getting it registered so I can do it correctly and with the least amount of expense. I won't be getting my car until mid- December, so May or June will most likely about when I'll be doing this. I really appreciate your comments and help, Thanks Again Bill Bess |
I bought my car from Mass. and had it registered here easily in Scottsdale...NO TAX GUYS MINE WAS ABOUT $36 with special plates

They'll charge tax if it's new. Not if it's previously registered, I would think.

Yeah, I think that's correct. I know my brothers FFR was taxed based on the price he paid for the kit. So save your receipts from the purchase.

The sales tax is a real mystery. When I registered my Lister it was brand spanking new and I was not charged any sales tax at all. I even showed them some of my more major receipts for the car, engine, trans, etc. Others have not been so lucky so maybe at times the staff does not fully understand the process and flips a coin to determine if tax applies or not (their version of the lottery). Although I did register mine in Mesa and I know that branch has done a ton of Cobras in the past. Anyway it is all a piece of cake and should not really be much of a problem. By the way the law does state that wipers are required (open top car and wipers?) but mine had none and they did not even mention it. I did have a clamp on wiper in the trunk just in case but it was not needed. Good luck.
