Carroll Shelby at SAAC-32!
Yes, I wish that was true. Many people, including myself, missed talking to, or watching Carroll speak at the evening program at SAAC-32 last Saturday, July 7th. I understand he also didn't attend last years SAAC (31) convention.
Does anyone know why Carroll Shelby wasn't at SAAC-32? |
His health is not very good and progressively getting worse.

It's hard to imagine that people have been saying that exact same thing since the late 50's. I'm sure today that statement carries a little more weight. |
Yes an old story but yes it is now at the point where it is a bit more serious.
|
It was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY to $%^#$ hot for the young and healthy . . . I was surprised Bob B. was out in the heat!
CS has had health issues since the 50s, its a miracle he's still around at all. I guess we all know that . . . Quote:

He will be at the Big Boys Toys expo in Phoenix this weekend,

Funny, there is a picture of the Noble M15 featured on the link that you sent. The M15 is far from being developed and will only be sold in the UK if it makes it to production. |
From what I heard Carroll was put on some new heart medication that his system was having trouble accepting..Ihope he's ok too...Dave

There was no mention of Shelby and why he wasn't at SAAC-32 at the Saturday evening program (that is, I didn't hear anything). Did anyone hear anything at the evening program, or anywhere else from a reliable source?
In the past, if Shelby couldn't attend a convention, Ric Kopec would call Carroll by cell phone, and play it on the speaker system for all to hear. I hope all is well with Carroll, and his health gets better. |

He seemed fine and in rare form during the VIR 50th June 8 - 10
It was hot as blazes but he came to the track as well as the dinners. He did panel talks during lunch with Tom Payne, Dr. Dick Thompson and Chris Economaki. The stories were some of the best I have heard. He also sat in my friend Nick Soprano's 450S Maserati that was the sister car to the one he won the 1st race at VIR in in 1957. Carroll signed the dash. Here's apic of what an 8 mil Maser looks like at speed. Nick is not afraid to drive it. He spun, he put it in the grass, he had a great time. I would upload a pic if this site would allow more than a pea or if I knew how http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...UP2007-11a.JPG |

I can adjust bump steer in a 427 COBRA but can't upload pics here.
Thanks..that is some kinda car, ain't it? They made about 10 450S's and Shelby commissioned 2 with 5.7 power. That's 1 of 2 |
Carroll Shelby will be in Phoenix/Glendale this Saturday July 14,so I guess heat is not the issue, however he is being paid to appear. I guess SACC needs to show him the money.

Well I can load pictures but cannot adjust bump steer out..... |
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to talk with CS at SAAC in Fontana. Cal. It was about 37 in the sun and he sat under a canvas signing - a mix of items from photos to glove box lids - for about 4 hours.
 Perhaps the task is a little daunting now - it is expected of him at SAAC. He didn't mind me looking over his shoulder.....%/. He raised a lot of money for the Heart Foundation and the young ladies assisting told me they are volunteers and CS gives 100% of the money raised to the Heart Charity. The line was about 200 yards long and it never seemed to get shorter....%/ http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...dad_shelby.jpg |
Well ,it was around 106 degrees outside in Phoenix/Glendale today. I went to the Men's Luxury Toy Expo & Auction this morning around 11 a.m. and saw Carroll Shelby sitting in his electric wheel car/scooter, talking to some people. Thank goodness it was nice and cool inside the enclosed stadium. I asked Carroll how he was feeling and he said, "Pretty good, pretty good. I'm getting old, you know." and he started laughing. It was nice to see CS feeling good, and he seemed to be having fun. The auction staff said Shelby was going to be signing collectibles and other things for people, having lunch with those who won auction lunch tickets (around $200, I heard), and watching his Mustang go through the auction (around 2 p.m.).

Re his absence at SAAC 31 we were told he was going blind in one eye and was requiring steroid shots directly into the eyeball to treat it. Pressurised cabins from air flight would play heck with that and consequently he couldn't make it.
|
There were a couple of us who got to shake his hand and talk with him later. He seemed in good spirits.
|
Dan, wish I'd known that CS was coming out to your car. I would have waitedd aroud longer. I wanted him to sign the book he wrote back in 1965 but after an hour of waiting in line, and advancing maybe 10 feet, I gave it up. Glad you got hooked up with him. Enjoy the protrait and your glove box signature.

Old Shel was at the Men's Luxury Toy show last sat. He look OK and in good spirits.
