Unbelievable, Mine Went Down Too!!!
 

This is just too much after reading what else has happened. I was taking my wife to dinner last night and I started getting some strange noise from the rear end and couldn't quite nail it down so after dinner we were heading home and I also started to smell something burning like gear oil or grease. I pulled over and my wife noticed all the smoke coming from the rear of the car. We got out and there was a lot of smoke coming from the rear end. Luckily my cousin came right over truck and car trailer in tow and back to the house with it.
We took the left rear wheel off and there was spray all over the inside of the brand new wheels I put on Friday. We noticed some nice metal chunks coming out of the wheel/axle bearings which is what I think dissintegrated. I pulled the entire rear drum setup only to realize you have to pull the axle to get to the bearings.
This morning I pulled the other side and also pulled the drive shaft off. I guess now is the time to switch to the rear disc's with an emergency brake.

Does anyone have any ideas where to pick up the rear disc setup reasonably?
I assume having never done this that I need to take apart the rear differential anyway to pull the axle? It has a leak so also a good time to replace all of those seals too!

You don't say what rear end is in your car. If it is a Ford 9" rear, the 11" disc brake setup from a 1978 Lincoln Versailles should most likely fit. The Lincoln rear is a 28 spline model that uses 11" disc brake "hats" and calipers with built-in cable operated emergency brake. That's the setup I use and it has worked like a charm.

You have a Contemporary with a solid rear axle, not an IRS? I've never heard of that - interesting.:confused:

I was thinking the same thing. This the first I've heard of one.

He sent me an email asking about parts and I referred him the XKs.com thinking he had a Jag IRS. Was very surprised when he told me he had a ford 9 inch..

I dont think its the same Contemporary company you guys have.

Sorry About That All, Not A Solid Rear Axle But A Ford 9". Off The Next 2 Days And I Plan On Working On This Thing. Now I Just Have To Find The Setup.
Thinking About Buying The Whole Rear End With The Disc's Already On It If Possible Depending On The Damage Done.

Hey Dan, got the rear end all together, where are you gonna be saturday night?

I'm going to Avondale to see the grandkids in the afternoon then stopping at 83rd on the way home. Be there about 4:30 or so. Oh, and I was just kidding about Karl. Even if it is a bowtie Cobra, it's an awsome machine.
