building a garage

Hellow all!
I am going to go ahead and get a garage built while I am stuck here in Iraq.
Perhaps that way I will feel like I have accomplished something:D:D
can anybody recomend a contractor who can grade a spot and throw a slab?
I live up in Catalina (when I am home):(

One of the members of the club, Stuart AKA Tan Man, is a general contractor.

Hi Fish, it's good to hear from you. Glad to hear that you're ok. I'll ask around the area and get back to you. Are you planning to build a steel building ? John

I'm just finishing up my garage addition and couldn't be more satisfied with my contractor. Jerry, at Greyhawk Builders, jerry@gbiaz.com has been totally honest with me, right on schedule, excellent quality, and easy to work with. Don't know if he'd be interested in doing a job in Catalina, but you can drop him a note to find out.

Hello all and thank you for the input!!
After getting "quotes" from some steel kit mfgr I decided to go with traditional stick built. The steel building guys are like car dealers, mucho bull****o & high pressure

Nester,

If I was to give one piece of advice about a garage that is going to be worked in this is what that would be. Wood burns from sparks, ( torches, welders, griders, fire pit to drink beer around when it's cold, etc.). Steel does not burn.

Speaking from experiance, build the steel if at all possible. If you are getting jerked around by steel guys, drop me a line. I might be able to help.

Nester:

A friend built a garage and for the slab, poly was placed on the ground prior to pouring the concrete. Purpose was to minimize moisture knowing the finished slab surface would be coated.

some good input

The plastic is a good idea, I do intend to paint the floor.
I am also going with wood 'cuz all my realestate appraiser friends say a steel structure will turn off some prospective buyers if I ever want to sell.
Fire is a genuine concern but It will be a detached garage so danger is minimised. I still need recomendations for a concrete guy and a framer.
