Is there any data, dyno information or even air fuel curves provided?

Karl Bebout 10-08-2008 02:36 PM

Yo Fitz, the air cleaner wasn't the only "issue" you had with that engine, was it? Ha

greg schroeder 10-08-2008 05:01 PM

What computer is being used?

csx4910 10-08-2008 06:50 PM

The air cleaner looks great on that car. Apparently it is only a problem on the csx cars since the superformance hood is a bit taller with a larger opening. If the intelligent engineers at Roush cannot figure something out I will be giving him a call. It sounds like enthusiasts that have a d" do what it takes attitude" can often trump an engineer. I had someone make me a set of the screens for the trumpets but that will only the leaves and the low flying rodents! To put any miles on the car I will have to have a filter system.

Ron,

Check out these.... http://www.verycoolparts.com/Stack.htm Look towards the bottom of the page.

You might want to give Wayne a call.

I forgot to mention this to Charlie when I was there yesterday.

The Roush guys who flew out here from the factory for this were able to consistently duplicate the issues I described with the engine, whew - intermittent problems are the worst. They ended up having to adust the timing, throttle bodies, fuel/air curves and the IAC (idle adjustment control) on my engine. Evidently they put about 50 miles on the car shaking it out and testing it with a computer on board monitoring the action in real time (hope they had fun :)). Charlie says they now have the tuning dialed in and the engine runs great. They also had to replace the spark plugs before any adjustments were made because they found them fouled due the above being out of whack. The car now has close to 500 miles on it so I'm having the routine 500 mile check on it done where the oil filter is sliced open and the oil is analyzed. Assuming that doesn't show anything I will pick up the car tomorrow (Friday) morning and ride like the wind.

So again, hats off to Roush for their GREAT customer service -- just extraordinary. This was all done at no charge under warranty. I'm gonna give Todd Andrews at Roush a call and give him a thank you and a big verbal pat on the back. Anthem Motors came through on this too and were invaluable in their help, so a big thanks to John and Charlie at Anthem Motors too.

SandyC 10-09-2008 04:12 PM

Oops, I spoke too soon. After an analysis the Roush guys say the IAC servomotor is too small on their FE-EFI engines and they're going to change out those IAC's with new larger and improved ones. Evidently this servomotor gadget helps at startup and cold idle. I was wrong on my previous post on what IAC (pronounced "I-yak") stands for, it really stands for Idle Air Control. They are overnighting the improved one to Anthem, but on the engine it's a pain to get at since it's located under the electrical harnesses and the stacks. So, probably no car tomorrow because of the difficulty in installation and then it has to be tested.

With all due respect, with the money you have in your Roush FE, you should expect that kind of service. Roush makes great engines, but it sounds like they might need to iron a few wrinkles out of their FE engines (based on the recent posts regarding trouble folks have had with them).

Good luck getting the car up and running correctly. I am sure it will run great once you get it dialed in.

csx4910 10-09-2008 07:05 PM

Sandy,
I didn't talk to anyone over there today. Charlie had mentioned that possiblity yesterday about replacing that IYAK. Did he say if they are replacing it on all of the motors?
Ron

SandyC 10-09-2008 11:27 PM

Ron,

He said it effects all their fuel injected FE engines, so I would venture a guess and say yours will be replaced too, but I don't want to put words in their mouths. You might check with them to get the official word.

Stentor,

Yeah, you got a point. However, I kind of knew I was trailblazing with this new engine going into the process so expected a bump in the road, as it were, here and there. My 511iR is engine number 14, I think one of the guys here (Ron?) has engine number 1.

I sold my Cobra a bit back and hope to buy another some day. I ask the questions about this particular engine as it's one I'd consider in my next build. My interest would be having a car in which I understand the system and to have ability to tune the car myself. The on board computer would be the way to go. Any data or detail, graphs or wheel HP values would really be valued to me for consideration.

I hope to hear about you in your new ride soon. That's quite a car you have. Keep up the good work and have fun. They'll get you dialed in.

SandyC 10-10-2008 02:14 PM

Greg,

The programming and curves etc. on the Roush system is proprietary and is password protected so unable to post curves and data as such. The computer I saw used to access the system is just a plain 'ol laptop with an interface cable. It seems their software will only work with XP though, it won't work on Vista -- imagine that.

csx4910 10-10-2008 11:23 PM

Anthem says the car is ready to be picked up! I am going down tomorrow morning to bring the baby home (my wife's name for the cobra) Roush ended up replacing the engine/FI management computer as well as a lot of tuning for the fuel injection. Kudos to Anthem Motors and especially Charlie and putting in the long hours to help get myself as well as Spooky, Sandy, and the others back on the road terrorizing the streets in the Valley of the Sun!

SandyC 10-10-2008 11:49 PM

Mine is also done so I'm picking my car up in the morning too. Ron, maybe I'll see you down there. Race you to the freeway:LOL: (just kidding).

csx4910 10-10-2008 11:57 PM

Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow until at least 1:00 so I won't be there until later but hopefully we can finally get around to enjoying our cars. At least with the temps down in the 70's it is officially prime driving weather in Phoenix!

Stentor 10-11-2008 04:27 AM

Good to hear that your engines are back in working order, and that you will be able to enjoy your cars during prime-driving weather.

Have fun and be safe.

csx4910 10-11-2008 02:12 PM

OMG (thankfully the limit of my texting knowledge) I just picked up the car from Anthem and it is a whole different beast! Again, Many thanks to Charlie and the Roush engineer that flew down to make my car and the others right. My faith is restored in Roush standing behind their product! It runs like a scalded cat!

SandyC 10-11-2008 03:14 PM

Yup, my car is a different animal now. Man, they got that sucker dialed in. Starts right up hot or cold with a quick push of the button and foot off the pedal. No misfires and great throttle response. Purrs when you want it then screaming thunder and traction limited when you punch it. Now that's what I'm talking about! Way to go Roush and Charlie.

Now, if it just stays that way...time will tell.

mikiec 10-11-2008 04:04 PM

congrats to both....

Mike

So-why won't the problem come back-these engines all ran good in the past and then had problems. What was fixed?
