PIR track day?
All y'all,
I'll be doing the next PIR track day with NASA on Sunday 10/05/2008. Finally got cool enough (I hope) to take the beast out. I think they're only running DE3 that day, so no track school, but it is a kick in the pants and I could use the support against the ricers. Looking forward to trying my new R-888 tires. Brain? Needforspeed? Tucson guys? Anyone? |
Eric, PIR is 'way too far for this East Bumbscrew guy, but let me know the next time you're going to track at Firebird and I'll try to come out and kibbittz. Likin' that big motor are you?

I do like the new big motor. On the road course, shifting is no longer necessary. At PIR, I can hold full throttle for 1.0 seconds before I need to lift, so for a short track it is a bit much. But that is why the right pedal is not a switch! I'll be around more since the weather is cooling off a bit. See ya soon. |
I was on the track at PIR yesterday in HPDE 2. Unfortunately I blew a clutch during the first session and had to limp home. I put the car on jack stands but haven't looked at the problem. I have about 20% of a normal clutch travel. Trans is OK but the clutch or cable needs some attention. I think a new clutch quadrant may be in order. Looks like I may have to pass on the Laughlin trip with the Cobra.
I've been on PIR before and Firebird. I like PIR much better and can go WOT for longer than 1 sec on PIR. It's a blast. However, it was a little crowded yesterday and the infield was a little congested at times. Good luck today. HPDE 3 is very agressive. |
Mike, at least you have a good excuse for not joining us for our little trip to Chalo's. I've got a motorcycle jack that works great for changing transmissions that you're welcome to borrow, if you want.

Sorry to hear about yer clutch. Yes DE3 is aggressive, but I find it more dangerous to run up on folks at big closing speeds if I run DE2 (did that once). The big motor and the car ran great and I pulled consistent 1:16s when not held up by traffic. Not blazing any records, but respectable times for a schmuck driver. Was passed by a few, but passed many more, so I feel comfortable in DE3. The group started with maybe 30 drivers, so it was crowded in the first two sessions, but then some folks left and the track freed-up some. Had an interesting experience with a Carrerra4 passing me on the inside in turn5. Not the most courteous spot on the track to pass, but he couldn't get me on any of the straights. That car was well set-up and could drive the off-line in 5 with ease... Ahhh, what big money can buy... Anyhow, are you going to PIR on Thanksgiving or how about PASA anytime soon? |

Glad the beast was running good! If I do not get a fix soon I will be running the Cobra in the next event. I swore that I was not going to track the car anymore but...... that is what rules are for! 1:16 are good times for these cars they are not the best handeling for sure!:cool: |
I Need To Know The Next Time They Hold Events Out There So I Can Try Mine Out There. I Really Want To Try It On A Road Course. Sorry To Hear About The Clutch Problem Mike Sure Would Like To See It Fixed So You Could Make The Run Up To Laughlin.

Track Days
Jim, Both Arizona sanctioning bodies (NASA and PASA) have their own licensing process and dues. First you must take and pass a driving course with instructors from their respective groups. One group frequents PIR more and one Firebird more. Both are comprised of fine, well trained people, drivers and safe cars.

ItBites...not sure about Thanksgiving. It depends if I'm in town or in California for the holiday. Looks like I'll pull the tranny and take out the clutch.
Karl....thanks. I'll take you up on the tranny stand. I won't start anything until next week. I'll call you. The car is up on jacks right now and I'm considering cutting an access panel on top of the driver's footbox to install a new clutch quadrant. Should have done so during the build.....duh! |
