Fuel pump question

I currently have a Holly Blue. It has been getting very noisey of late. Changed the fuel filters it helped. I noticed after starting it back up to check for leaks that the pump is leaking. So it's time to replace it.

If I'm going to replace it I want something quieter.. Any suggestions?

Carter, Edelbrock or Holley mech pump

Changing to mechanical pump means I need to change out the front cover and then add a concentric.

The motor in question is a 92 302 out of a mustang.

Barry Grant is on the pricey side but will run quieter than the Holley. Edelbrock builds one called a quiet-flow.

Mikie, the modern Holley Blue is built different than the old one. I am on my 3rd. First 2 lasted about a year each. Current one is in 5+ and still fine. Looks different too.

Mikie, you could probably rebuild ther Holley pump and save the exstra money for the next thing to die. There's always gonna be something.

Try the black Holley Gerator pump. 1 to 1 swap with the blue diaphragm and much quieter. Did the swap 2 years ago and so far so good.

Mallory makes a really nice pump too.

I found the problem, why the pump got louder... The rubber isolator was worn out. I replaced the isolator and the pump is quiet, well as quiet as a Holley Blue can be. I checked pump pressure and volume. All good.

So, for now, I'll keep using the Holley.

I have had a Holly Blue on the Cobra that I sold for over 7 years and it has never given any trouble. I also had an aeromotive pump on one of my cars and it worked very well. I never heard my Holly except when I was getting ready to start as I used rubber shock mounts and that dampened a lot of the noise. Only problem I ever had was I had to replace the regulator once.

This is a common issue.

My Holley Blue pump also died this past weekend while the car was warming up. Lucky me !! Just ordered the Holley HP-125. Never liked the Blue one, it was too loud without the engine running. I will rebuild the blue and keep it as a spare for a rainy day. Soon I'll need another trunk for all the spares. :3DSMILE:

Blue Man,

That is part of the joy of these cars. Trying to decide what is going to break or fail next. I carried an extra coil, fan belt, distributor cap, coil wire, two spark plug wires, and numerous other items that I could find a place to stick out of the way. The fan belt was the only thing that I had to use as the one I had on broke one day when I was going down the road. Guess I was just lucky with the Holly Blue Pump as it has lasted all of these years and not a problem except the regulator going bad that time.

hey mike, as my car heats up and the longer I run the louder mine is getting, I pull up to a light and that thing just roars over my exhaust. what do you thing, just rebuild it?

Check the flow in your fuel system (not necessarily the pressure that the intake) .. i.e. fuel filters. Back pressure make the pump work harder therefore louder.

mikiec 05-28-2009 05:30 PM

Do as Dan suggests...

Check the flow and pressure. If all is good then look, like I did, for where the rubber isolator is and replace it. Mine was worn from age and heat. I replaced it with a thicker piece.

Did the same with the fuel regulator.

And even though the fuel filters were no more than a month old, I replaced them.
Mike
