All the Butler cars had the number stamped into the front of the frame on the drivers' side just behind the bumper mount. The format is BRImmyyzzz (BRI for Butler Racing, Inc., mmyy for the month and year the frame was fabricated and zzz for the sequential chassis number). You may not have that many total characters if you car was numbered under 100 or was built in the month 1-9.
I've seen a red Butler around Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties over the years. No idea if it's #88 or not... hard to check the number when it's moving! Someday I'll see it at a show and meet the owner. There are at least a dozen that I know of still around the tri-county area here (includes Ventura Co.).
There were 104 kits produced by Butler Racing, in one form or other.

Spotted butler # 88 at Avila Beach ca. last weekend. I talked with the owner for a minute or two before leaving. Said he drives to Avila 2 or 3 times a month on the summer weekends just for a drive from lompoc ca. His car is simply stunning!!

Hmm, that might explain where I've seen the car... he drives by my house 2 or 3 times a month!

Not to change subject but, I was in my storage shed and I still have the hood for a Butler that some one needed to finish his car. Was about 2 or more years ago and I said I would have one made for him for free, just to help him finish his car. No reply after I had hood made and I still have it. I don't need it, and when I first discovered this site I was real naive, guess I still am. I post what I think is helpful information or try to help and get blown off, sorry for rant but I felt real stupid when I saw the hood. Anyone know who that was?
