String Align Windscreen
My windscreen is cracked and since VicRoads insist that I need a windscreen I thought I'd try to minimise the chances of it instantly cracking again.
I did a quick search and couldn't find much on string aligning your cobra windscreen. rather than type a couple of thousand words...;) http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...indscreen2.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...indscreen1.jpg It's a handy technique courtesy of my little brother that I had not heard of. the idea is that the string should cross in the centre and just touch. Nice tip LoBelly, thanks!

Originally installed my windscreen and support brackets as one piece.
Hadn't any problems in the short stint of driving I did in the car, but curious if anyone can suggest if I have created a potential stress problem or overcome it too. |

- just undo the screws - remove the windscreen - check the alignment It turns out that the under dash roll bar of my RMC was narrower than the 'legs' of the windscreen - which I would imagine created a stress issue however the crack appeared after we towed the on a trailer with the car facing backward (final straw?) Good tip mate. Just watch tightening the bracket in the centre of the windscreen for the mirror. I have seen it crack a screen.
I did not use it on my Cobra for that reason..... Mmmmm Vicccee roads.. |
When I installed my screen I found two issues:
1st the width of the screen to the bar it sits on, if it's too narrow or wide it will stress the screen. 2ndly the angle of the support/bracket on the bar was not on the same angle as the screen so I had to bend it to the same angle. I found this out by another rcm builder clamping his screen to the bar and my the next morning there was a CRACK right down the middle of the screen which made us then check the angle of the screen uprights to the bar bracket. After I did those two things I placed the scrren in and let it find it's own centre. Hasn't cracked yet in 10,000km |
Wouldn't be torque twist on the chassis breaking the screen mate would it!
