Drilled & Slotted Discs
 
Hi All,

I mentioned in another post that I was playing around with drilling and slotting my disc rotors. Well here are some pictures, I hope you guys can see them.

This is one of the finished discs. I tried a couple of patterns for the holes on an old disc and decided on a directional pattern. I'll drill the pattern on the other disc reverse to this one

Hey that worked!

Here's a shot of the Mill with the fixture I made. This enables me to accurately cut the concentric circles on the rotor. I believe the latest Tickford Fords use concentric circles on their discs as there is less chance of a crack forming in the curved slot.

Thanks Ed,

I just took the sharp edge off the holes with a hand held drill bit. That seems to be the common practice when drilling motorcycle discs, so I thought the same would be OK for these.

Hi Alvin,

The rotors are Jaguar XJ6 Series 3. I guess it wouldn't be to hard to do the same treatment to any disc, just a bit of set up time required.
Don't know how well they work yet since my car isn't finished yet. I'll be able to tell you in about a year. I may do the discs on a friends sports sedan in the meantime to see if there is much improvement.

Looks like a nice job, I grabbed a pair of slotted DBA dics the other day for my front end from Race Brakes in Flemington. Not much is happening here at the moment, work is flat chat and all our equipment at work is tied up, preventing the manufacture of bits and pieces that I need for my car. I've still got that wheel project going and should have one ready for machining ia approx 2 weeks.
If that mill is in your garage at home its obvious you have a very SERIOUS MANS GARAGE with all the condiments. More power to you!!

I haven't made much progress here either, just mucking around with the parts I've found already.

Looking forward to seeing one of these pindrives, should be cool.

I built a serious shed in my back yard years ago 20'x30' just as a work shop. I've just extended it out to 30'x30' since I was running out of storage space for all my junk.

The Mill was a big old pile of poo when I bought it. I spent months cleaning it up, fixing everything and I adapted a single phase motor to it. My friends into the same stuff are always saying "You can do a small job on a big mill but you cant do a big job on a small mill". The Mill is about 7' tall and weighs probably 1 1/2 tons. Ex-industrial 3 phase equipment is much cheaper than smaller single phase stuff as long as you have the room for it.

I spoke to the guys at race brakes a while back when I was enquiring about calipers and discs. They seem like good guys and happy to give advice.

I think you will find the radius of the groove you have formed into the rotor is the main feature guarding against cracking.

In sectional profile a groove with any sharp corner will pose the greatest threat to cracking with the cracks starting from the sharp corner.

The use of fillets to spread loads represents an extension of this load/stress issue.

Hi Stephen,

I was thinking about that aspect as well so I used a ball nosed slot drill to cut the grooves. I used an extra long series slot drill and ran it on an angle as you will probably see in the shot of the mill. Ball nose mills run a lot better when on an angle and don't wander so much. The angled cutter tends to throw the material away from the cut rather than back into it and gives a bit better finish as well. Not sure if the half round groves will clean the pads the same as a square grove but it's got to be better than no groove.
