Tail lights
G'day, Can anyone tell me if these lights are going to be legal in Victoria please? If so what were they off originally? (they came with the car so I don't know)

My engineer tells me that as long as the lenses show Ew then they're okay.........but I'm in Qld but the ADR is the thing, and that's national, so they should be okay

They look like Land Rover lenses...they passed for me in NSW as well as the parkers in the headlamps. When I registered my car the lenses had to have the euro 2 symbol moulded into the lense. I'm sure someone else will add to this info.

Yes they seem to be Landrover lenses - I got those for $5.00 each at the local supplier and they were ADR compliant.

The lenses need to have an E stamp with some coding on them. Agree that your lenses look like the domed symetrical versions used on the landrovers. Very cheap and legal option to use for compliance. This E stamp was one of the items Enkelmans paid attention too during my inspection. Internal sidelights in the headlights is legal and ok. I've a number of Lucas L691/692 versions I've bought off ebay and which are strictly non-compliant that I will be using but you need to get through engineering first. Good luck. |
You can buy compliant E marked L691 and L692 lenses now Slowy. Mine went through engineering OK with them.

Yes that is the value of this forum at the least. Mike I meant to say I've compliant and non-compliant Lucas lenses and I'm thinking of fitting the non-compliant versions in the rebuild. |

I'll presume you're asking about the L691 / 692 lenses, so no they are no better or worse, just a different shape and look. These were the same as used on some of the original cars and they are a round light with a more conical pointed centre rather than the dome of the landrover lenses. So a slight feature tending towards originality but either lense will do the job and the landrover versions will be cheaper. Cheers |
OK thanks Steven. I was wondering how many versions that there were. I used the clear lenses (with orange bulbs) for the indicators and that was fine with my engineer.

There are a squillion Lucas versions out there but for the original cobras it was the round L691/2 versions in red, orange and clear and the rectangular version that I think only had stop light indication. Not sure Enkelmans were that happy with clear being used even with orange globes but I didn't want to use clear anyway. Cheers |
Yes Steven the original UK cars had that I believe, but the US of course had the rectangular combination lights. I was surprised that the clear indicator lenses were ADR compliant for the Cobra, as I specifically checked on that, but so now many new cars have them with the orange bulbs.

I tried clear lenses with yellow bulbs for engineering but they were rejected. There is a number associated with the E marking and the engineer looked it up and found these L691 clear lenses were for Parking lamps. They had to have the right number for indicators.

Amazing as I did check that and my engineer was quite happy with the clear Lucas lenses from Land Rover.
With the majority of new cars with clear lenses it makes no sense. |

If the lenses were from a landrover then they weren't L691's I'm guessing and so probably had an E stamp. If you look at the codes on the indicator and stop lenses they should have different codes indicating use such as Mike says. The clear Lucas L691's code indicates parking lamp use only, not as an indicator, and this relates to the way the lens refractory properties have been developed and made for the lens to operate. Same reasoning applies to the headlights as the old headlights don't work as well as the new designs including the ability to not blind oncoming drivers. Same reasoning as to why the tripod Lucas headlights aren't legal. Just the fun police spoiling our day again. Peter I'm sure you'd have seen the Vicroads guide for lighting, this gives you the dimensions you need to meet particularly for the side indicators too. Cheers |
Will check 'em tonite! Neither the engineer nor QT had a problem with them. They were E stamped.

Clearly the non-uniformity issue raising its head again.
My engineer was almost anal about having the E stamps and checked all my lights. Yet he went on to talk about the ability to get lamps made by off-shore operators including your own choice of stampings to be provided to these lenses. I know there are some good tripod reproductions around, maybe these have the right stamps now. Other wise the engineer didn't have an issue and the traffic agency didn't care either. So much for consistency! |
I even used the same engineer as Geoff. All my lights are PERLI and the indicators are E11 stamped and (O1A) 7271 numbered. I originally had orange ones, but changed after asking the engineer.
I even asked the QT guys and they were happy. |
