Steering wheel lock
Can anyone point me to what ADR might talk about steering locks? I would like to use a dash mounted key ignition switch instead of the standard column setup in my commodore column. This would mean no steering lock.
I thought this was mandatory but i cant find any ADR that says so. Does anyone know anything about this? Liam |
Liam, I recently learned about this requirement when I mentioned to some of the guys down here about putting my ignition on the dash. No idea what the ADR is but these guys deal with engineers all the time and if the engineer says, well... what choice do I have?
Now if the column mounted ignition were to fail after rego and there weren't any more at the wreckers... perhaps I'd have no choice but to move it to the dash? :) |
Not sure on the current rule since the advent of immobalisers, but it required key operated anti theft devices, but not steering lock specificaly. Volvo's did not use steering locks, but had the key on the centre consol and locked the gear shifter either in Park or reverse for manual.
I have retained the steering lock for ignition, and use a dash mounted start button. |

I have a Torana collum but had to have a dash mounted ignition due to the smart lock with the AUII engine.
For ADR (VIC, a few years ago) I had to have Steering lock, an important point is that if the steering is locked it must cut power to the ignition. Otherwise you could be at full throttle and not be able to take a corner:eek: So I have 2 keys, one in the collum and one on the dash. The key in the collum must be on so the the ignition in the dash gets power. As my auto elec said "nobody is steeling this car, unless its on a truck" |

Just on the column, does anyone know if the bottom off the column needs to be mounted seperately to the top column mounts? It would appear that the bottom mount needs to fail first to allow it to collapse. If they are connected all on the same subframe i imagine there is a risk the column wont collapse and the whole subframe will move towards the driver. Any thoughts? |

I bought a Vt or Vx column orignally but it was an Airbag column that doesnt allow aftermarket steering wheels. I am planning on using a billet specialties steering wheel so i bought the boss kit for that to suit late model GM. I then took the boss to pick and payless and found it fits VK/VL. So i ended up with an 85 VK column. The shroud is metal so i can paint it up nice and it wont look like it doesnt fit. I dont like the way a lot of column shrouds look on cobra's. |
