Fitting door handles

Car's off to the trimmer next week and I've decided to swap the plasticy looking Toyota handles for pretty chrome Pajero ones.

The fit is different though, requiring a metal plate to be fitted inside the door skin (I think) rather than the push fit of the Corolla ones.

I'd appreciate any hints on fitting these Mitsu bits if anyone can help out.

Thanks

Show us some pics and we might have some suggestions...

I,m pretty sure mine are Pajero. This is what I came up with. Not finished yet as I need to fit the covers inside.

Thanks Bob
Just tried to post pics without success.......ahhhhh
Yours are the same as mine, i was thinking though that the mounting plate may need to be recessed into the fibreglass or the handle will stick out too far.
Won't the upholstered door card need to be quite thick to take up the gap behind the hanle and plastic trim part?

Wodnas 05-14-2010 06:03 PM

I measured the height of the door cards first and modified the mounting plate for the handles so that the plastic cover behind the handle would end up at the same height. I had to cut of some of the mounting plate and flatten other parts.

Thanks Bob
I'll look at modifying the baseplate

Bob's are the same as mine Gregg. They are Pajero, and rears if I am not mistaken. If you are fitting Warwick's 'custom' door mouldings you need to be careful to leave enough glass underneath on the flat 'glass panel to have the mouldings fit well at the rear where the locking component is installed.

Thanks Merv
I think the trimmer will make up the cards, i get what you're saying though. The cutout for the latch on my car is quite a bit smaller than on Bob's pic, so i guess that should be ok.
Did you modify and then fix the base plate to the glass as did Bob?

Merv and Sharon 05-16-2010 02:38 AM

No Gregg mine are different. Much smaller area of glass was removed and an 'edge' retained towards the outer part of the door, towards the latch. Like yours I suspect. I am away in Jakarta just now but will post some pics on Thursday, if you still are interested. We are all keen to see yours and Bob's cars!
