New import rules.
 

It's not looking good for importing modified vehicles including 'kit' cars.

Even the Race Import is fairly stringent in its CAMS licensing Requirements!!!:eek:....(Cost of a vehicle of the same locally in most cases can not be used)...So they're now saying we can't purchase overseas to save thousands on a car!!!...Yeah right let's see you try and apply that!!!

I was talking yesterday to the guy that imported my car a month or two ago, and he said that it's a complete nightmare now. You need to include photos when submitting your import approval documents. Think you can try to be sly and show photos of another car? If customs inspect the container and see a different car, it's either sent back to the States or it's impounded and sold at auction by the public trustee!

It has been similar for boats, especially yachts, for many years. Is the old arrangement of bringing in the car in separate pieces (chassis, motor transmission, body, etc.) and then assembling here still viable?

The legislation is laughable ...so let's see,we go buy the PRE-1989 car(Un-restricted import) of your dreams that you've come across on Ebay within the last minutes of the auction.
....all legit unmolested but we may and will stop you bringing it in if we so choose and by the way please allow up to 17 days for your application to be processed!!!!

So how the F@RK do people buy if there's no guarantee of the process will be done in time or that their purchase will be allowed into the country and they wonder why people find the loopholes to import.....
This Legislation is of course due mainly to the crap the RICE-BURNING community brings in and registers or rebirths!!:mad:....they are not alone but are the main offenders!!!

Prior to when I imported my car (Jan - March 2010) I had to do a full submission including detailed car pics etc plus had to submit my complete motor racing history and experience (courses/events etc) plus CAMS license, QRDA license and assoicated race courses events I have done....

It's a tough process... 1/2 mill $ race Ferari's imported into Aus that can never be rego'd attract LCT even though they are designated race cars and should come in under that rule! All to do with being able to fit passenger seats. Another costly issue!

The easiest car to import is an open wheel race car as it fits into the criteria well however the bit about ensuring nothing comparable built in Aus poses an issue as well. An open wheel race car should only atract 5% duty and GST if you can get it passed the Australian manufactured bit!.

There is NO certainty and some cars have or nearly have been sent back. The easiest way is to get all your paper work together and present it 1st off in a concise manner and it will avoid headaches. If you can't/don't get a VIA (vehicle import approval) certificate then you don't buy it!

On the ebay scenario you just have to do your diligence 1st and submit and if you don't get it best don't bid! Easier said than done I know. A VIA is $50 so its like getting a RACQ inspection or a REVS check before you buy a car here in Oz...It's not perfect and timing is an issue I know I know...

It's a nightmare no matter how you look at it and I'm glad my business doesn't rely on it as its the usual beaucratic nightmare! Might make cars already here increase in value maybe... Dunno.
