Do supercharged engines hate manual geraboxes??

It always seems that supercharged engines have auto's behind them??

Is it because the open and shut throttle on a manual gearbox promotes blower backfire?

Hi Twig I have 2 cars both run superchargers and both are manuals no backfire problems at all.

Cheers Greg

That answers that!! Thanks mate.

There are gearboxes and there are gearboxes.

Never had a backfire problems ever at all either.

Toyota R154 5 speed or T56 should do fine.

Backfire = poor tuning, running lean due to not enough enrichment when the throttle is cracked open.

Superchargers make manuals redundant :D

Guys have had problems running a cog belt on centrifugal blower without a big enough bypass valve. As you get off the throttle for a gear change, if you can't dump all of that compressed air immediately it can reverberate back to the blower. As the cog belts don't allow some slippage like a serpentine belt, this can lead to them shearing teeth in higher boost applications.
Decent bypass valve solves the problem completely.

To answer your question - supercharged engines don't hate gearboxes, but most driveline parts will hate the power of a supercharged engine if they're not designed as part of a complete bulletproof package...

Backfiring issues in forced induction engines can also be cause by by-pass (blow off) valves venting to atmosphere. If the engine uses a MAF or AFM, the engine thinks it is getting more air than it is so runs rich and backfires.

Interesting Craig, never thought about those issues. My experience is only twin screw blowers with the throttle body upstream of the blower, not downstream as with a centrifical blower. I would've thought the impella would cavitate rather than breaking gears but when the impella is spinning 50,000 plus revs then anything's possible. Don't know why anyone wouldn't run a bypass valve though, they make sooo much sense.

Are you talking about a Paxton or Vortech?

Twig Couple of questions about this, How much power are you looking for??
HP? How much boost? How many blow off valves are you running? Who's supercharger are you looking to run?? Whipple, Paxton, Vortech, Kenny Bell??
What belt setup for the blower. Surp or Glimmer? What is the torque and HP rating of the trans you are looking at?? These are all important questions to running a supercharger on the car.

The last and most important question is how you are going to drive it and is the drivetrain up to the extra power? Rear tires or slicks will make or break you. A little note for you if and after you do this, Learn to roll on and off the throttle. This will slow down the supercharger and pervent blower bang. Also a good ignition system with timing retard to work under boost. Waiting for some answers. Rick L.
