Those plugs attenuate (both intensity and frequency) very poorly on the acoustic evidence and the cup/muff type protectors are by far the better.

My employer has always told us the plug cancels more DB's then muffs. But even better wear both.

Your employer is wrong Ralphy. The problem with most plugs is that they are not individually moulded (disposables) and also if they they are well made and then fit really you well and fully occlude, you can hear little speech from other workers. Muffs cover a greater range of frequencies and give greater protection but they need to be good ones as well. They are also not very comfortable. Both could be good!

The typical ear plug drops the DB by about 30, not taking into account the range and other factors, just a general statement. Many plugs do less. Depending on how much noise is in the environment 30 DB down from that will help, but it may not be enough to prevent damage. DB at a given level for a given time (there are charts) will do damage. The louder it is, the shorter the time.

I wear ear muffs when I'm working, I think they are better, and the very best ear plugs I can find when I'm driving the Cobra.

Merv the problem with muffs are getting a 100% seal. Wearing glasses or your hair breaks the seal. Also they never seem to compress evenly around your ear. Not looking to argue, heck I wear muffs myself almost 100% when I do wear ear protection.

Looking at the chart we are both right, depends what frequency. But your more correct!:JEKYLHYDE

Yes Ralph, the ear muffs (cup type with soft edges to accommodate glasses, etc.) are best but the real damage was always thought to be high frequency noise as it damages the hair cells at the beginning of the cochlear and when damaged permanently affects hearing for speech (particularly in distinguishing among consonants and creates confusion among some vowels). Now research has shown that low freq noise - often not as easily noticed - is equally damaging of high frequency hearing.

Despite being deaf...what about the abuse to that engine. Those rapid on and off hard revs put amazing stresses on the crank. Twist then un-twist. Good thing it gets rebuilt often !
