Fusible link help.
Hi guys. Just wondering is someone may be able to help me source some fusible link wire. I have blown mine and I can't find anyone to supply it. The two manufacturers, Narva and can't recall the other company, have apparently deleted this from their product range just recently.
The wire I am after is the black fusible link wire which is rated at 24amp. I have tried a few local sparkies as well as the auto stores with no luck. They are all now going to the new cartridge style fusible link, which slot into the fuse box into dedicated connectors. Mine is needed for the circuit between alternator and starter. Oh by the way, the reason for the overload has been rectified (no pun intended) , so this is the last repair needed so I can get over my cobraless withdrawal syndrome. Black fusable link wire is more than 24 amp
I think the colours matches colours on new Plastic fusable links so that means black is 80 or 100 amp. Anyway I have all colours of fusable link wire 30 bucks sounds bout right I think Everything I have for a cobra is 30 bucks Hehehe Just teasing. Are you sure about the rating, as in one of the catalogues I looked at, apart from specifying the wire cross section, number of strands etc. it also stated that for a 150mm length it is rated at continuous 24amp and 40amp failure, which seemed about right as it is only wired up to a 55amp alternator. I certainly don't want to under rate it otherwise I will be forever replacing it, and conversely I don't want to overate it for fear of letting all the smoke escape. From your experience what should I be using? |

Why not do away with the fusible link and put in a circuit breaker. You should be able to find those without a problem.

However it looks out of place and dont know how long it will last with the vibration it will be subject to under the hood up against the rail. If I could find a fusible link cartridge "holder" then this would be the way to go, as changing a cardridge fuse is much easier than struggling to get to the starter motor wirring. I'd just go down to pick-a-part and cut a suitable fusible link holder out of an under bonnet loom and then wire it in to your loom. You regularly see them in the engine bay near the battery loom.

Do NOT put a fusable link in your car! There are probably videos on youtube of the violent fire that they produce when they blow. I have seen it and it's not pretty. You do not want that happening under your hood, especially if it's a fiberglass car. You might as well just light a road flare and throw that it instead. Manufacturers have stopped using them for exactly that reason. You should just use 10 gauge wire from your alternator to your battery and another to your fuse block. Make sure the wire is well supported (at least every 12 inches) and protected by wire loom tubing. If you have any questions about wiring, I will be happy to help. RallySnake |

Hi Boxhead. Sideshows offer was extremely generous, and I hope I have not offended him, it was not my intention. It was only for convenience that I placed the order as it was easier to get it in a post bag, than drive to Sideshow's premises, and I felt to ask him to post it to me after giving it away would be too much on my part, as I have not as yet even met him in person, to be able to take that liberty.
With regards to the safety issue, the wire is only 150mm in length at the starter solenoid junction, and it is designed to fail and melt, but not catch fire as the insulation on this type of wire is different. The original one did just this, it got hot and smelly, and eventually the insulation pealed back a little at the point the wire melted completely, but did not catch alite at any time. I share your concerns regarding fire under the hood, but I feel quite comfortable that this should not happen with the Fussible link Wire. They are infact a safety feature, as they are designed to fail before a more serious fire, such as behind the dash etc can occur due to an electrical overload etc.. I hope I am not wrong in this and will explore the other options. Perhaps sideshow with his knowledge may be able to offer some advice or suggest what alternative would be best. |
No probs I just bought 2m of blue and black fuse wire
I rarely use it As I think any fuse wire or fuseable links in The engine bah looks crap I remember the old classic wiring harnesses with 5 or so fuseable links in engine bay I always laughed at that setup Cause these cars are suppose to be sort of Show cars but some I think in my own opinion Would not pass that I guess it takes time and money to make Something look nice inside and out |
The best thing I think you could do Pills is go and see Sideshow, he will quickly and most probably cheaply hook you up with what you need.
