Fuel tank progress
 
After my regulator issue, i finally got my tig welder up and running for the first time.

I am making a custom stainless fuel tank. My mate owns a fabrication shop and was nice enough to sell me the steel cheap, help me cut it out on his guillotine and fold it up on his sheet bender. He also gave me a 5 minute crash course in tig welding and gave me some pointers on how to weld it so it wont warp.

Today i got the outside all welded up and im really happy how it is turning out. When it is finished i will be polishing it up to a mirror finish.

I used 1.5mm 304 stainless. It will have an in tank pump.

I have done a lot of stick welding, but this is my first go at the tig.

How many litres is that thing?
Do I need to measure my chasis for the size that will fit?

and where do we order one...

They look good! The only TIG I've tried is on Aluminium, with varying degrees of success, what was his tip for preventing warping, if it's not a trade secret?:)

No secret,

Just getting the whole thing tacked before welding. The real difficulty is in the baffles. The tank has a tendancy to bubble where its welded to the baffles. I found this really difficult as you cant get a clamp in there.

That's looking good. I use a load bar for the back of a truck and push off the ceiling to hold the baffles in place and the tank flat on the table when fitting baffles.

Don't give me that metric crap,..... what's 90ltrs vs gallons ? lol

I was gonna say to build me one but, you're too far over the BIG pond for me in Nebraska USA ! :LOL:

At least with Metric a Litre is a Litre all over the world, with gallons you've got Imperial and US Gallons! Oz once had Imperial and the conversion was approx. 4.546 litres to the Gallon, so that would make it 20 Gallons (imp). US conversion is 3.785 approx. 23 gals.US
I noticed, with surprise, on my Gen 4 donk the nuts and bolts are Metric. Go figure! :confused:

Hi Mickmate,

I actually had that idea, but when i couldnt find anything within reach that was the right length, my trigger happy finger got the better of me. Still turned out ok though.

What do you use for the filler pipe? I havnt bought the cap yet but i was planning to use a couple of 2" stainless mandrel bends wrapping around the chassis and up to connect to the cap with a bit of hose. From looking on the net 2" appears to be the standard size for the cap. Is this correct?

Do you use straps to mount yours or brackets?
