Help with kit ID please

Hey there everyone, a mate of a mate (sounds dodgy :)) has either just bought or is thinking of buying a partial build kit.
He has asked me if I know anything about the one in following pics.

I could be (most likely am) wrong but I think that is a falcon front end? Or it may be Toyota Crown, but does not look like a crown chassis?

I know that car

Boxy,

All I know is that it needs alot of work :3DSMILE::3DSMILE:

Dave, looks like a 'D-Type' from QLD. Has a blend of Cortina and XD Falcon front suspension, and usually Falcon live rear axle. Very roomy cockpit for large/tall drivers.

boxhead 09-21-2010 09:18 PM

I was thinking the De Type car (as that was the only 1 I could think had Falcon parts in front end)

Modena 09-22-2010 03:54 AM

I know that it's dusty!

OZCOBRA 09-22-2010 04:27 AM

Hey may be a bit of work and DUSTY ,but for the right price it would be a good start ...seems to be quite a bit attached to it,guessing all panels hung, windscreen frame in,Mirrors ,bumper bars, steering...wheels...side pipes ...Lights plus anything I guess we can't see.

..Keep us posted Boxhead!!!

I have advised the potential buyer to join here and ask regarding NSW rego (I think he is in Sydney)
The front end worries me a little, it has radius rod front ed, but the rod is going backward from the control arm, I can not remember ever seeing a car where the radius rod goes backward.
I fear that the load bearing capabilities may not be up to scratch.

From memory Torana radius rods run back from the upright. At least they did on my old LC.

Fair enough, it has been many years since I last saw under a Torana.

From last email I think John (guy I am in contact with) has purchased the vehicle.
From info he has the car is a D Type, for you fellow D Type owners I will shoot you a PM and ask if I can get email and phone contact from you to assist John.
I think he is trying to get into contact with supplier, are they still around?

He is wanting to run a different engine, at the moment will be either dedicated LPG windsor or late model XR8 (I am assuming upto AU - as I will let him know that the quad cam probably wont fiit without major modifications) - will NSW still allow the previuos Ford V8 to be used? I guess if you can make it pass IM240 then it is ok, but will it pass?

Also in NSW, what ADR's must you meet, are they as applicable on the day you present the car for approval, or is the date set out some other way?

Thanks again.

ADR 37/01 for emissions in NSW now. So technically you should be able to use an AU Falcon engine as they originally complied with ADR 37/01 when new. You will need to have it running clean though for the IM240 test.

Tell him to go really different and fit a duramax.

Zedn 09-23-2010 05:42 AM

Boxhead,

I dont think anyone can really answer what ADR's you need to comply with in NSW anymore. He really needs to speak to an engineer. If he is in Sydney and needs an engineer, PM me and il give you the details for the one i am using after speaking to 5 different engineers that said no.

I have a meeting with my engineer booked for next week, but based on a short phone call, i will need chassis torsion and beaming, seat belt anchor testing, brake testing, noise testing and emmissions testing. It doesnt seem that the actual requirements have changed, just that the RTA are now asking the engineer to show evidence of how they verified the car complied. eg test results, calculations, finite elements etc. I think that this is what has put off a lot of engineers as it takes time to produce the evidence and they cant charge the amount they need to, to make a quid. I have been told to budget 5-10k. Previously others have told me they paid 2.5-3k.

Merv and Sharon 09-24-2010 02:04 PM

That seems very expensive Liam. I think I paid less than 1000 for the engineer from approval letter through to passing ADRs certification. Of course being a Harrison, all the testing (including swerve test?) had been done in the factory and on the track by the 'test' vehicle.

Zedn 09-25-2010 12:59 AM

Yes, the cost blows out in the testing i believe. If i was starting again, i would go for a kit like the Harrison or CR that comes with all the test results. Mind you then you would have to build it exactly the same as the test vehicle for brakes, steering etc. I believe there are chassis test results for my kit, i have been meaning to contact the manufacturer and ask if i can get a copy.

I was told there were engineers in NSW that were doing dodgy full ICV compliance for like $350! Apparently they are long gone and we now suffer consequence.

damo 10-05-2010 04:24 PM

Hi Yes that is definately a DE Type it is exactly the same as mine I do have contact details for the builder, he is contactable. I have paper work chassis and fibreglass testing.
It is a very well built chassis, super strong and the body is very solid. It has ford XE front and rear end.
Please do PM me or get in touch by email so we can compare notes etc.
Cheers
Damo

boxhead 10-05-2010 09:25 PM

Cheers for that Damo.
When I get back home from holiday I will contact John to see what he is up to.
