Emmissions test at Vipac

Hi guys, just thought i would share my experience at Vipac Test Lab (Victoria) yesterday where my cobra went for its initial Emissions test (IM240), cheaper alternative to full ADR testing. The test was a pass on two runs on the dyno. It was a Classic Revival with 6.0 litre and 6 speed manual it was fitted with custom headers directly coupled to VE SS cats with O2 sensors either side of cat, from cat to custom side pipe muffler back in under vehicle exiting to rear thru x-force resonators. The computer was set up by LSX Conversions to standard VZ 6.0 with MAF, to suit cobra requirements. Intake twin pod filters.

Cost for test $550 inclusive of GST and allow about two hours for testing although each of the actual test recordings are done over a 4 minute period.

Off to engineer next week.

Well done Nigel. Sounds a nice car. Put some pics up soon perhaps?

Thanks for sharing Nigel. I assume it passed? Is there any benefit in using 4 O2 sensors? Any idea how many decibels?

And do they provide a dyno graph as part of the test?

Sorry for all the questions! Good luck with the rest of the process.

My decision to use 4 O2 sensors was based on keeping as close to GM build as possible to obtain euro 3 emissions, if it works for GM product why not stick with it, the test report consists of 2 pages first page with all the numbers the second has the graphs. I also to the car to an EPA noise test, i had done some preliminary tests and i was achieving under 90 Db on the default V8 RPM (3300) this was also the case with EPA test, however if the test is done at 75% of advertised power (6.0 is 260@5600) then the test is about 4200 rpm my test was 92 Db the EPA was 96 Db a bit disappointing but the EPA guy said if the engineer uses the default all will be OK have to wait and see next week.

When i drove it to the test it was so quite a bit like a new SS off the lot.

will try to build my gallery if i can work it out.

Good stuff Nigel. What is your header design, eg, 4-2-1, what diameter pipes etc? Any hi-temp coating or heat wrap to help the cats get up to temp? What about pipe diameter behind the cat?

Nigel Pearson 10-13-2010 12:09 AM

Sambo, 4 into Cat and 4 out cat thru guard and into 4" sidepipe muffler. The VE cats had the inlet and outlet cut off and replaced with 4 pipe flange i had a heap of pics but i can't find will take some more and post in gallery over the weekend. 1 3/4" x 4 primary and 1 3/4" x 4 out cat, no coating at this point and no heat wrap around cats only foot well shielding to stop heat and fibreglass burning, i did modify end of tootwell to gain extra clearance to Cats.

Well done Nigel. Looking great. They are Dragway wheels?

Nigel Pearson 10-14-2010 02:50 AM

Hi Merv and Sharon, thanks for the comments, the wheel are supplied by Team 111 and are listed as AC111 cobra replicas.
