Seems a comprehensive and up-to-date resource/data base.
I did notice the now allowable engine capacity relationship to vehicle mass: All vehicles originally weighing more than 1100 kg. Original mass (kg) x 5.0 = max. capacity in cc’s Original mass (kg) x 3.0 = max. capacity in cc’s (turbo and supercharged). Does this rule out some of the larger motors in Cobras? |

ICV checklist hasnt changed and is out of date.
Still has 700mm for seats and still has glare reduction in field of view. power to weight ratio is a worry. I hear lead makes a great undercarpet insulator %/ |
[b]Unfortunately, version 2 of VSB 14 is bad news, the brake test is much more stringent (section LG) and will need to be done on a test track. Building ICV under version 2 is going to be more challenging than in the past, hence the cost will be higher as well.

Since we have little cars with big brakes has anyone encountered trouble complying? Except for those who couldn't be bothered to adjust the handbrake "correctly"?

Table LG5 Test Sequence and Conditions for ADR 31/01 Abridged Brake Test has the procedures, they might take a while but really, who wants substandard brakes? I just fitted up a new XY PBR booster as it is a bit punchier than the Girly one it had (and on it they modified it wrong so the reaction valve wouldn't operate). With Jag brakes, XY booster and master I feel confident. In this day and age testing time is money tho, so I can appreciate the statement from the engineer "hence the cost will be higher as well" |
Speaking of brakes,
It is now written. 2.7.2 Protection Caliper pistons must be fitted with dust seals. This removes the vague wording previous about being suitable durability. |
How do others interpret the weight/engine capacity ruling?

IF I have build approval dated prior to 01Jan2011, do I build to the previous regs?

The brake test procedure has been in force in NSW since October and before that there was a very similar test also required. This is a problem for NSW people because there is limited tracks available and basically means paying an engineer for 6hours travel time to get to goulburn from Sydney and then the cost of the test and track hire. My engineer had a cobra that failed and it cost him $3000. The test will still have to be redone! Outwest, The abridged brake test will still require all of our cars to be done at 160kph. The note about heavier doner cars is not relevant unless you are using the complete system from a doner. Using calipers and a different master cylinder and pedals requires full speed test. The problem with the test is spinning out. The car will stop, it just needs to remain straight and not lock up the back wheels. Merv, I think the power to weight ratio is not relevant to us. In NCOP10 there is a statement about ICVs being made by the manufacturere and hence not having to comply with the modification rules of VSB14 unless modifying factory doner parts. I think that the power to weight ration is intented for engine transplants in cars not designed for such a large engine. If a cobra is build with that engine and all testing is carried out with that engine there shouldnt be a problem. Liam |

Hmmm, I think I'll let the engineer do the driving in that case. I stand behind all my brake work, it's safer than in front. |
