Roll bar stay help please
I have a full single rollbar as per pic below. I would like to make it removable so a tidier one can be made later on and coated or chromed.
The 50mm plastic pipe is easy to work with but will soften in the sun I fear :) so I will go metal. That way I just burn my hands. If you were to cut the rear stays would you go for in internal or external sleeve? Use solid rod or hollow pipe for an internal? Full through bolts or embedded grub/ set screws? I will make my join just under the rear deck fibreglass because the angled stays will lengthen as the bar is pulled up. The bottom floor plate will be unboltable and free to jiggle while the bar comes up. How much gap can I cut around the stays and be sure a store bought bezel will cover it? Only the rear of the hole needs to be lengthened. Any suggestions or pics etc are welcome. And yes, the boot interior is not symetrical. This may help. Back stays are inside the main legs and join just under the body. Small piece of pipe welded inthe leg the sleeved external down onto chassis. Will never be removed I don't think but can be with abit of work. Thanks for the pics Brett, they give me a guide. I notice some subtle differences between your body shell and mine now, that I never noticed when I visited you. Different step in the boot and different tunnel shape slightly. Your tunnel seems to have a step on the LHS. My floor plate may look excessive but I was planning on welding a nut on it to hold down the commydoor space saver spare (yes I know the PCD is .65mm different) and maybe a tie down point or 2. For anyone planning to add stay here is a handy calculator to make life easier. Enter data, print page and use as template, cut away to your hearts content. although a different hoop design to yours, here is mine.
The main uprights slip inside pipes that are welded to the frame (done like this by kit supplier) then there is a though bolt that secures it. You can see the round tubes infront of rear springs. http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...PICT0014-1.jpg Looking at the far right of picture, you can see a flat plate, this is one I have fitted and welded (not painted at time of picture), I have used this as the base mount for my down leg/stay on roll bar. This sits flush with underside of boot floor. Nice tidy solution Boxhead.
Unfortunately I can't adapt that method due to my close fitting fuel tank. I will keep it in mind when I'm sitting in the boot again today though. |
