Surging / misfiring with MassFlo

Just thought I would share a problem solved with my Mass flo kit.

Engine would run at idle and at wot but would surge at low throttle opening while driving.

I have a large oval COBRA air cleaner which sits above bonnet line and below scoop.

Problem was airflow entering filter and rushing across maf meter causing a disturbance therefore throwing out its readings.

I taped the front of the filter so air couldn't rush in there and problem solved...

Only mentioning this incase someone else is also tearing their hair out trying to find out why?????

Now off to the dyno!!!

Sounds exciting,
You wont be dissapointed with the dart bottom end, what heads are you running?

Interesting. I have some minor probs with mine on low throttle, especially when motor is cold. Won't run at low revs very well then. I have the same filter set up. I guessed it was the large injectors being asked to do very fine metering at low revs. Will just cover the scoop intake and see if that makes any difference.

Phil,

Just my trick flow 170's. Won't make big hp but should have a reasonable amount of torque. Have only done a couple hundred k's on it so far and only about 50k with it running ok. Definitely more punch than the 302! Can't wait for Winton. You are going there aren't you?

Merv,

Yeah we were really scratching our heads. (well pete was, I had no idea....) I even bought another 044 fuel pump...

Merv and Sharon 01-26-2011 10:56 PM

I also got another pump ... just shows, time and thought can be a solution. Will try this tomorrow.

Definitely see you at winton.

Yep read about this on the FFR site several years ago...they used a pice of alum. in fromt of air filter.

Why not just block the scoop?

TUF-427 01-27-2011 03:40 PM

Merv,

I think your filter is below the bonnet line anyway in a harrison so prob out of the airstream,

but the air from the thermofan could also disturb if their this sensitive and it looks like they are...

Brighty also has a Stage2 airmeter which has more resolution for bigger injectors 36+ so could possibly be more prone to this than the stage 1.

I think an internal baffle inside the filter is the answer as you still want the benefit of cold air from scoop if possible.

Merv and Sharon 01-27-2011 04:47 PM

Yes Peter I was thinking of an internal baffle. Good idea and thanks.

Done and very nice!
