Good work Boxhead, I reckon 1 bar looks heaps better than 2. Make sure you post some pic's of the fans in position.

Regards.

Damn nice work...simple and clean.

By the way, with regard to your sig line...please remember that the ark landed on Mt. Ararat, which is in Armenia.

We invented everything...Greeks and Turks steal.

...just sayin. :p

The original fans are very inefficient even if they DID have a shroud around them when compared to modern fans of the same diameter. Still, they represent "original" and look good but that's about as far as they go. In addition to the original fans, I mounted a SPAL 16" puller fan on the rear of the radiator and that does a good job keeping the motor out of trouble even on the hotter days. I also use a thermostatic sensor in the radiator fins for the fan to come on automatically at 195* and a manual override switch on the dash just in case I want them turned on sooner. OH, I have things wired so all fans come on at the same time. Thus far I have been more than satisfied with the performance. I originally mounted the fans so the center of the fan was approximately halfway up the radiator. The fans appear to be higher because the radiator is tilted backwards so the fans are actually pointing somewhat downward. The motors are to the outside with the fan blades closer to the radiator.

I may be missing something but if the motors only turn in one direction why not simply turn the fan around? %/

Regards.

Looking good Dave, very nice.

I think Andy may be off the hook for the 'heaviest cobra' cobra award though ;)

boxhead 08-27-2011 03:54 PM

:) there is at a guess3 - 4 kg in the brackets and fans.
If I was worried about weight, I could drop alot of kg and still be heavier than you.

I know some cars came with two fans but my original car came with only one fan in the middle. The car would overheat in heavy traffic. I added a second fan like shown which solved the problem. I now have a large puller fan in back of the radiator which works even better. I had trouble with the fan blades breaking when I was driving the car about 12,000 miles per year. I think I had to replace the fan blades about 4 times in 60,000 miles.

I managed to finish the fit up of the fans this arvo.
As time permits I will pull them off and paint the motors black.
Here you can see how I mounted the frame to the chassis.

And in place.

rms427,
Nice car!!

Regarding the cracked fan blades; All blades on the pair of fans I removed several weeks ago showed small cracks. I have about 14,000 miles on the car.

Boxhead, my highest praise...mucho muy goodo.

Merv and Sharon 08-28-2011 01:53 PM

Dave, by the look of that radiator, those fans will also be good bug slicers! May also deter local 'roos.

lovehamr 08-28-2011 04:17 PM

Boxhead, I don't know if now is a good time to mention this but there was a reason that I went with 2 cross bars holding the top and bottom of the motors. Mine is the first car in post #5 BTW (BDR687). The guy that I originally bought the motor/fan setup from had only a top bar like yours but it was fairly flimsy feeling. When I mocked them up>1" from the radiator it really seemed that If I were to lean on the car (which I do) that the fans might contact the rad core. I don't know what's original and what's not but that's why I added the second bar. Just thought I'd mention it.

Steve

Gav 08-28-2011 04:55 PM

I wouldn't worry about the second bar Dave, with the way you have built it I would think using it for a tow hitch would be ok too!!

boxhead 08-28-2011 05:56 PM

Hi there Steve, the construction is pretty solid, I grabbed it with both hands and yanked forward and backward, I thought the car was going to fall off the hoist, but the fans did not move.

Cheers Gav, she aint moving alright :)

boxhead 08-28-2011 06:04 PM

Oh man, a mates son just commented when he saw a picture of my Cobra with fans in place "Daddy, why did that man put Towmaters teeth on his cool car"

Aussie Mike 08-28-2011 06:26 PM

I think your car has just got a new name. We'll have to call it Mater from now on.

Phil, they look like comercial aircond condenser fans to me. They come in many sizes. Try Actrol, Lovelocks or any comercial aircond supplier.

Is this where you got yours Dave?

boxhead 08-28-2011 08:29 PM

I got mine from Baz earlier this year.
Same as what Finishline sell.
