The Work Bench Thread
Hi All,
With the recent bunch of Shed building threads I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about the work benches and storage setups people have used or built. I'm still fitting out the storage and benches in my shed. There's junk every where and I need to get organized. With my recent fuel tank build it's made me realize that I need a decent fabrication and welding bench. I've got a good steel topped work bench I built years ago but for fab work you need a good flat table that can walk all around. My work bench is up against the wall and only about 600mm wide. I've started building a fabrication table and will post a few pics but I'm keen to see some discussion on what everyone else has for work benches. Show us your work bench! Cheers |

I am putting in three sets of these, with the matching Gladiator sealed MDF benchtops.
http://www.gladiatorgw.com/assets//g...550X550_HO.jpg Now, these are rather too nice and shiny for welding and grinding, so I also have another actual "work" bench, which I got for free from a school, I think it is an art or woodwork bench, stool-sitting height. Its a solid steel frame with a wooden top, and I have cut and bolted my old particle board/laminex kitchen bench to that for a more solid surface. As a task in my garage refresh I will be ditching both tops, refinishing/painting the steel frame and making a new top, surface is yet to be determined, so thanks for starting this conversation Mike :) I was thinking of some sort of hardwood, or gal/zinc steel-wrapped MDF or wood of some sort. Would welcome suggestions. Ben |

My name is Phil and I am a shedaholic!!!
I have separated an area in my shed that contains my Lathe, Mill, sand blaster, welders and grinders. I've fitted a couple of MAXIM stainless steel 2 door wall cabinets. Not as sturdy looking as the Gladiator ones but still very good quality and the right price. They have a good range on eBay if anyone's interested.
No workbench photos from me, the shed is a disaster area at the moment. :D |
No bragging rights from me at all on this. My Cobra started life in a 95-year old, brick floored, single garage in an old Queenslander. It then moved to a new house at the Sunshine Coast and lives a slightly more spacious environment. Nothing like the huge expanses I can see here. They say we have the biggest houses in the world and now the biggest sheds as well maybe. I built my own cupboards and my own bench and have to be neat or I lose things!

My current garage is a tin shed, and the work bench I built using left over yellow tongue & 2x4 :( Philm: Outstanding - I've seen pro-workshops that don't even come close to that, I love the way everything has its place. So neat and tidy. Bernie: I've always liked yours & the toys in them (some go without mentioning, but I also love the vintage Ampol pump). Merv: I love the Cobra logo sign hanging off your wall, and the floors finish - very classy Modena: Yours is coming along very nicely with the race deck & Gladiator benches. Looks the part for a snake pit! I especially like what looks like a TV wall bracket ;) Not to mention Reptyl's & Boxhead's... Wow! Congratulations to all. I can't wait for the wife & I to move into our new place. It is a humble home, but it does have a 2 car lock-up garage and a 3 car car-port. You guys are definitely providing inspiration. So Thanks! Sorry for the slight hijack Mike! I think you're onto something with regard the "walk around" to "work around" island work bench, perhaps some fancy sprung wheels which compress under load to anchor the bench down, but also allow you to move it out of the middle of the workspace should you need the room? |

I'm loving the memorabilia Bernie. I just bought a couple of tin signs for my shed at the vic market a couple of weeks back. The Shepp swap meet is coming up in a couple of weeks and I'll be keeping my eye out for more stuff. Cheers |
Rob - one of the things that I like on the 12 Gauge Garage is the folding benches. A great option for those of us with two-car garages. I also often wonder, if asked, what advice I would give a new builder about the 'most needed' tools?

Im nearly there with my shed . A few more doors to hang and install the splitty and im there. The bench is mdf with a folded gal cover.easy to keep clean. Yes Phil,
The RTA have accepted my Engineers calculations on Seat, Seat Mounts, Seat Belts, Seat Belt Mounts, Brakes, Front sand Rear Suspension and Steering. I have a tentative date for my 2nd inspection next Friday 9/89/2011 at Botany. Fingers crossed. They are only checking 6 minor issues like, ride height, sun visor compliance, braided brake hose markings, Indicator telltale operation, Intermediate Steering shaft compliance and compliance of my switches on dash. All of these have been rectified so I should be getting my VIN No., in the not to distant future. Thanks for your interest, Baz |
