Lap timers at tracks in Australia

In starting to think about the dash layout, I'm thinking of integrating a permanent lap timer. A lot of the ones I see on the market are infra-red based, with a beacon that hangs on pit wall.

Understanding that during an actual race event transponders are used, but dont most (all?) tracks have inductance loops in them, and if so are there lap timers which will work off these loops so that lap times can be taken and seen/recorded in the car during for example open practice, when there are no official timing devices/transponders being operated?

Kart timers work in the above manner, of course in a kart the ferrite pick-up is only about 30mm off the ground.....

I have looked into the GPS lap timers, and dont wish to go that way - looking for accuracy down to 0.1s

I have a GPS lap timer that is accurate to .01 secs apparently.
It is called 'racechrono' mine has an external GPS antenna that can go just about anywhere on the car. They are made for bikes so are light and rain proof.
It is really easy to use, all the Australian tracks are plotted and have all the sectors pre set.
Lap data, speeds can all be viewed without downloading to a PC.
It was within a hundreth or so with the timing gear at the nationals.
Ash Bright has one too if you want another opinion.

Yep, Racechrono is the way to go. Was within .05 of 1 second of my AIM timer at the Nationals. John White and Wayne Proctor also have the same unit. So much more data is available. You can also download to .avi to overlay on incar video. Check their website Welcome to RaceChrono
If you still want to go traditional timer I have an AIM unit for sale.... PM me.
