So in summary, in most states they are now legal but they would need to be so choked to make the existing dBA requirements, that an underbody system would be more efficient?

Your summary is reasonable and I would suggest accurate.

The guy who built my sidepipes was convinced that I could make more power with an under car exhaust. I needed the ground clearance and I prefer the sound of live sidepipes...

Current ADR is <74dba on 3 WOT drive by's in in each direction in 3rd ( 2nd & 3rd if you have less than 140Kw ). Quite difficult to achieve with a 4 pot because of the harmonics.

Took me for attempts to get Nemo through.

How do you do that test? WOT in 3rd gear would have me doing 170/180 kmh!

There are two marks 50m ( from memory ) apart on the road and the sound meter is 15m from the drive by line offset at 90 deg midway between the two marks.

You arrive at the first mark at 50Kph and floor it and then snap shut at the second mark.

You then turn around and come back in the opposite direction and repeat another two times.

The results for all runs must be repeatable and the average within spec.

As I said I took four attempts to get through and John ( Cobra guy ) took two attempts, the harmonics put out by a four do you no favours and a clubbie has far less body work between the engine and the sound meter than a Cobra, so the bang coming out through the block has little to damp it.

I had the entire car lined with acoustic foam, a double pass and triple pass muffler, a baffle plate in the pipe and stainless steel wool pads in the exhaust and a sheet of 6mm ply under the engine bay.

With the car strangled that badly you don't want to drive it any further than you have to so trailer it to the test location, hitting V-max is not an issue, Nemo has also seen 170 in 3rd at Wakey.

The noise test when applied as per the ADR IMHO is the toughest test in the ICV process, until you get to the petty stuff at the end.

Dave King

I'm pretty sure it's only 20m Dave, but the start is from the front of the car, and the finish is at the back. This makes the test 20m +vehicle length.

And I thought the Vic test was tough! Car is stationary and running at 2/3 of redline (no load) with the mic setup 1m away at a 45 degree angle to the tail pipe. Must be under 90db.

Treeve 02-05-2012 11:13 AM

G'day Sambo,
The test you mentioned is the static test, the dynamic test is the one Suthol described. I'm not entirely clear, but I THINK that if you fail the static test you can do the dynamic test. Will check later.

Could be right Treeve, I did it during the colder months of 2010 so:-
a. it was a while ago
b. it was off season and I had forgotten how long a cricket pitch is

Just know it was tough, my static reading as described above was 82dba but is only a reference and has no relevance to the ADR noise test result.

If the RMS are now accepting a static test with the larger number then life gets that little bit easier.

So......

the scenario thus: I've just connected my previously non working sidepipes to my recently Qld registered car and Constable Plod pulls me over for whatever reason, what's the sidepipe legality? (i have no idea what dB they are and no heatshields)

Is the answer the same if the occifer was from the QLD or NSW constabulatory ?

*Cobber* 02-11-2012 07:31 PM

You will need to talk to Qld transport. If there is now a method to run live side pipes they will require you to go through the process. I would guess, noise and emission testing along with heat shields etc. They would then issue you with a mod plate or exemption to show the fun police of any state or territory.
