That is just stupid

Tim Brewer 01-17-2012 09:16 PM

I think that is sped up a bit....

Merv and Sharon 01-17-2012 09:30 PM

As someone who used to hang around those places as a teenager .. that is amazing! It seems sped up, but if you watch the movement of the guys there, I'm not so sure. But how would you ever know who won? However the Finns in winter do get bored.

Rob. Smith 01-17-2012 09:30 PM

yeah the 'drivers' heads aren't moving as fast as the cars......bloody frustrating though. When one crashes they all stop...They should play for real. when one crashes he's out! That'd make em drive better.

Aussie Mike 01-18-2012 02:24 AM

I reckon they've been near that fast for a nearly 20 years now. I used to mess around with them back in the early 90's The roundy roundy cars were just to fast for me to control so I built 1/24th scale drag slot cars. They usually raced at the same venues. They were insanely fast as well but it was all about reaction time and trying to get the car to hook up and not just flip off the track.

There's all sorts of tuning tricks to do to the motors. light weight re timed armatures, rare earth magnets, special bushings etc. A lot of them have so much metal cut out of the engine case they are just a skeleton. It's all about trying to keep them cool and keep the weight down.

well guy i have 24 of the littlebuggers
24th scale / 32nd plafit chassiscar they cost around $90 for just the chassis alone
in brisbane there is racing for about 60 different classes no about 10 different tracks
have a look at red racer hobbies they have all types for sale or hire

Gaz64 01-18-2012 03:49 AM

The speed is real.

I used to race slotcars since the age of 7, ran group 12, group 15 in the '90s.

The wingcars you see in the video are "open" class, the motors are the pic Mike hosted above, worth about $400+ each. The motors don't drive well at low speed.

It takes very good hand/eye co-ordination to drive one of these, I was used to group 15 and one my mates let me have a go.
The car was a turn ahead of me and the car came off the track too many times, I gave up, too fast.

I agree with Boxy it's "just stupid"
When I was a kid we used to make our own cars and tracks. At the time rally cross was a big thing at Calder raceway. So we built our own rally cross track. All was good until too much water got into the motor from the water splashes.

That would be hard to drive because you wouldn't be able to see your car for a lot of the time ...the buildings would be in the way.

ZOERA-SC7XX 01-21-2012 12:28 PM

They got too fast to see in the 80's. The only people who could react and see them were kids under 18 or so. I built and raced them in the 60's when they were more fun and slid around some on the track. Now I'm back at it with old vintage cars on a routed basement track just for fun.
