Side Pipes
Hello All, First timer at using Thread. I'm building a Harrison Cobra, But trying to understand how to connect side pipes to extractors without using a flex joint all photos I've seen dont have any. But I believe that if you dont use flex joint how do we get away with holding side pipe to chassis as they are fixed solid??? this would cause undue vibration. Am i correct in saying this.

My side pipes are mounted with rubber mounts, two on each side.
They don't melt as they are on brackets off the pipes. The pipes tilt with the engine as it moves. They will move ALOT when launching off the line at the drags! |
Welcome RAAPS. Will this be a street car in QLD? I am not sure on the regs on live pipes after a recent thread/post by Treeve.

Thanks for response, Yes Merv street car in QLD. As we do went building we are always thinking ahead, Im still 10 mths away at this stage to have finished for Rego.. But I trying to get different areas placed in my head on how it will work, So your info is helpful. I have being told that QLD rules state you can have side pipes but they must still exit rear so we would have to turn them in front of rear tyres then exit out back. After Rego and inspection remove rear tail pipes is my idea. But have a local guy here building a DRB he states his engineer has past side pipes for rego But they must be coated for heat ?? I still believe Qld transport will fail it??

To my knowledge the side exiting pipes are still illegal in QLD for new Cobras, but in SA there was a recent post:

Deciding, after registration, to remove the rear routing and exit in front of the rear tyres, is up to you, the local cops and your insurance company (they will always look for an 'out' in the case of an accident), however. :) Very few of us have done that, as the cars do attract a lot of attention, but the rules may change in QLD at some stage. Keep us posted. The Harrison is a pretty good product. Did you get the extended body? |
Here's a step-by-step retrofit with good photos that may help. As already mentioned, the brackets are welded onto the mufflers & then attached to the chassis utilizing rubber isolators that dampen vibration & will tolerate movement. (forget about my mufflers - not trying to sell them to you - just showing the muffler assemblies & how everything works). Also, the actual hanger part we left attached to the chassis during all this - we just needed to be able to position the tabs onto the mufflers.
