Hi guys,

Just thought I'd introduce myself and was hoping I could ask for some info regarding Australian regs.

I'm Pete, currently living in England, but I've got my visa and am planning to move out to Perth in the next couple of months (house just sold!). I've been building a Dax De-dion cobra (Kitcars Dax Cars the kit car manufacture of component cars) for a while (lazy bugger I am - but the garage is freezing most of the year!) and am hoping to bring out what I've done so far and the parts to complete the build.

I was hoping someone could give me some info on the regulations to get a personal build registered, for example, pre-1996 engines in England do not require cat converters, is there any reg like this in Aus? Do I have to have the converters, or does the age of the engine define the requirements for the exhausts? I've also read somewhere about immobilisers being mandatory, is this also true and can you get kits which retro fit easily enough? Also heard something about minimum ride height, etc ... So many questions about the specs required to pass the registration, any info or pointers would be really welcomed as it would define what spec parts I need to get to complete the build ...

Welcome Pete,

In answering the paramount question - Can you complete & register you DAX here in WA? - Well the answer is "yes". There are other DAXs registered in AUS so the precedent has been set.

The problem will be obviously to comply with the local ADRs, and these can be somewhat "subjective" in that they can be "interpreted" differently by "engineers" & the "assessing traffic governing body".

In short your best move would be to contact a local engineer in WA and seek there advice. They will be able to outline the do's & don'ts.

In the mean time you'd do well to familiarize yourself with this website:

I believe the 3rd edition is what we are currently up to (see below). Your engineer will better assist you than I can here .

There can be a bit of maze to negotiate through, but don't let that put you off.

I am sure you can, what it will end up costing is a big ?

Yes you will require immobiliser (Kits are available)RhinoCo Technology :: Alarms and Immobilisers

You will need to meet emissions as per engineers requirement, which I think in WA will mean 96 engine ok with cats (ask engineer)

Ride height is 100mm minimum.

You may be required to supply torsion and beaming specs, as I would think the other DAX vehicles have most likely have been assembeld and registered in UK and imported as complete vehicles.

Maybe ask around here if other DAX owners have a copy of testing paperwork, Engineer again will advise what you need.

You need to contact Treeve on this forum. He has been going through this. Problem is that it is not considered as parts cause its assembled and its not considered a car because there is no vin.

Treeve should pop up soon.
