You can buy a USB composite adapter which will let you feed the analogue video into a PC, capture/record it, and put it in any format you wish including DVD, H.264, etc.

Here is an example of one on ebay

You saved for year and a half? There are several ways to do it. Use a video camera with line in and plug the vcr straight in, then capture the video onto your pc, or just get a box that converts rcd to usb. Or just get a capture card with video in.

I bought a $15 do.dah off ebay that has about 4 different input plugs, "HDMI, Composite, RCA and Super something or other"
It plugs into the VCR or DVD or TV output and into the usb on my netbook.
Hit play on VCR, Record on Windows Moviemaker / Dvdshrink and it captures it. Moviemaker can create DVDs, or i use Free PC User Magazines video toolkit to convert it into anything alse.

Or if you already have a dvd recorder hooked up to your tv. Just plug the vcr into it and record. then transfer to disc

Is there a quality/bit rate (my ignorance) difference? Petrolhead did you buy a commercial quality set up?

DVD is only 480 lines, and if you're coming from VHS, just about any PC can do it.

O.K. I don't have a VCR nor does my laptop burn movies, only pic's what I purchased is a LG VHS/DVD converter if somebody knows how to get around this blocker I'd like to know as my daughter would like to watch her Mary Poppins movie, as for saving for a year and a half thats how long it took me as I'm only on a disability pension due to a brain tumor paralizing me down my left side,

Once copied, you can use most desk top PC's (and some lap tops) for editing.
