Auto Cobra won't change gears
Hi All, Just posting for a friend who's just completed Evans Cobra won't change gears. Engine is a 1998 302 windsor running a Tickford manual computer, the gearbox is a ED 4 speed electronic auto with it's own gearbox computer which we think was a one year only option, will not change out 1st gear, the box has been checked & with a diagnostic tool connected selects all 4 gears, we have also tried several different gearbox computers, any idea's?

If it was stuck in third I would have suggested that it may be in limp mode for some reason...any way using scan gear to see if you can come up with any network bus errors or fault codes.
Assuming that the fluid, clutch packs, bands, servo valves and selectors are all sweet it may be a computer network compatibility communication issue. Ford 4-Speed Auto’s use TQ95 fluid as well but you probably had that covered all ready. Are all the output shaft speed sensors, turbine shaft speed sensors, Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) Solenoid, Shift Solenoids SSA and SSB, wired in and networked correctly? Just shotgunning here as a place to start, maybe some of the guys on here have had this issue and can narrow it down. |
if tis stuck in 1st means auto ecu is powered up
has it ever changed gears or is this first time running its an ef or el v8 if its got seperate auto ecu? pretty sure i know what it is if it hasnt been run before as this is common fault i can sort it if i have loom infront of me sorry but cant give info out as its common mistake just get him to take it to whoever wired it to go over it |
It is missing a negative supply to the solanoid loom I'd say.
|
Go on change it manually..
|
We do Burnie!
|
Does it need a speed signal like the toyota autos.??
Oz |
It's cheaper to put a manual in it

Without seeing what has been done it is a bit hard to say exactly what is wrong. |
yes they run two throttle sensors both on main loom
but auto ecu is on other side of dash to engine ecu so what I do normally is cut whole auto ecu off and rewire every wire on it maybe the guy who wired it hasn't done one before and doesn't know the tricks hebeheb |
Anyway where is car
If its in vic send him to gav to fix I doubt anyone would send it to me after the sheit hehehehehehe |
Many Thanks for all the replies, were thinking it could be the speed sensor it's a VDO one not Ford, Shift kits Australia sell one which they say will fix the problem & also adjust the shift pionts, any thoughts.

I am not too familiar with the way that the early electronic Ford auto's work, but given that the shift points in mine are selected by speed and throttle position, that would probably work fine.
Can you choose your set points with that arrangement? |
u just need to play with speed signals to adjust shift spots
but those kits from shiftkits aust are pretty cheap so they might be worth it not to sure if its my end but that website is so fking slow can open much up we dont like the old ford ecus hehehe so we wired up an ls1 ecu to a ford eb v8 that was in a ford prefict/anglia just to see if it will all work and turned out ok |
Finally got onto that site
Those kits give u firmer shifts U can prob use speedo corrector to make shifts happen earlier or later |
