Polishes
Following a tip from Darren, a member up here, I tried one of the new nano technology German products - Car Lack68 - and was most impressed. I was wondering what others are using?

G'Day Merv, I'm using Maguires with Carnuba in it. It seems OK. I'm a bit suspect on stuff with silicone in it. Old school painting theories about silicone making it hard to repair paintwork.

I'm happy with the results of Mothers polish at the moment.
Nuvite is also highly recommended product, I haven't used it personally as yet. |
There seem to be several generations of 'polishes'. The carnuba waxes are tried and true and the Car Lack 68 is wax and silicone free and typical of some of the new easy to use sealants such as Klasse. Interesting products:

I was using that product in the 90s. I guess it is new formula?
It all depends on the type of paint, condition of paint and how long you want it to last. Canabu waxes look the best, but dont last as long as synthetics and dont have the fillers in them. I use menzerna polish and P21S wax. Very expensive stuff but it is high quality. I have been using hs scratch resistant clear on my car which is what's used on Audi and Mercs. The polish I use is specifically for this type of clear. I bought it when I had an Audi. The clear has ceramic in it to resist fine scratches so normal polished don't like it. The P21S wax is good if your paints in good condition. From memory it was around $65 a container. Waxit.com.au is a good place to buy. The guy there is really knowledgable about all car detailing matters. No connection just a happy customer. He used to offer 10% discount to Audi forum members. |

Whilst there are tons of polishes and some ultra high end products one of the overlooked areas in obtaining a good finish is prep and technique.
Paint correction (diminishing compounds) used with a hand held fluro up close will show scratches and imperfections that you never thought were there. Get these gone and watch how your chosen poilsh shines. Anyway, I use the same process that I have for years, claybar, Scratch X, Show Car Glaze, Yellow Wax. However am now using claybar, ultimate compound, ultimate polish, NXT Tech Wax. All Meguires. |
leroy17 you hit the nail on the head....all waxes are good. Some fill the scratches and most don't last too long, but that's what they are designed to do. Protect the paint and be a sacrificial layer to protect the paint. I never use compound, it's liquid sandpaper.
A clay bar is for only when the paint feels gritty...pretty rare unless you are near a paint shop or industrial area......past experience after a "professional" repair. |
Good point. Its a process not a product. I think the clay bar is an important step Leigh, for many cars.

I use the car lack 68 and rate it highly....but if you know where you can get it delivered to your do for under 45 bucks for a liter bottle...I would be happy to here it:)

Adam - it cost me $55. I have done our three cars and have hardly made an impression on a litre bottle. I have been impressed with the ease of use.
