700kg's and 700HP CANAM!

A real one! Was faster than a F1 car of its day apparently. The owner was giving it a little shakedown pre Eastern Creek Historics....

Just an outrageous earth rumbling ear splitting ball tearer of a car. Big kahunas to drive it never mind at full noise. Having it rise up in my rear vision mirror had me heading for the hills! AWESOME and was really "lucky" to have been on track with it as the same time...... Also glad to be off track too! LOL:LOL:

Looks like a Mclaren M8

Can-Am is by far my favourite motorsport class. Amazing to watch.

Cheers

Mclarens dominated the class for many years untill the Porsche 917 arrived. At it's height the Porsche turbo flat 12 was making in the region of 1100-1200HP in a car weing about 850KG

Cheers

Awesome!!!!

Aussie Mike 06-17-2012 06:49 PM

More Can-Am goodness.

Turn your volume up for this one

HOLY $#!T that "The Sound of..." video was AWESOME. That McLaren fired up in a blast would make any competition stuff it's tail between it's legs roll over onto it's back and pee all over itself.

Absolutely Awesome.

Damn, I wish I was a senseless billionaire---I'd have a fleet of them!

Thanks for sharing!

They just started using these engines in jet sprinting as I left the sport. Awesome power and sound. I think they were large cubes from memory, but there was all sorts of engine sizes. Was 500+ cubes I think, when standard was 400cuin or around there.

Watching those videos I now understand what the coyote experienced when strapped to an ACME rocket.

Great viewing and the sound!!!

those things are nuts!

Mrs flatchat 06-18-2012 04:23 AM

Awesome ! when I grow up, I wanna be a Can AM driver..:3DSMILE:

That clip of Jim Pace in the M8 is pretty much how they actually sound and feel like -- the wind buffeting and everything shaking and wobbling at full noise is how it looks from inside the helmut ... the helmut wants to lift off as well... scary fun:D

My mate in Germany has a M8F since 1975 (former Kelleners car). He is still racing it.

Today tall deck blocks are widely used but because of rod throw the stroke is under 4.5" (not sure if more than 4.25"). Else you would have to lift the engine, which impacts on everything.

There is a chap here on cc who raced one, too.

I was lucky enought to be a Laguna Seca last August where a full field of CanAms were running, including what look like the Vic Elford car.

Aussie Mike 06-19-2012 06:21 PM

I reckon the Shadow AVS is one of the madest looking Can Am cars. Basically a Big Block chev powered Go Kart. I think Vic Elford drove this one too in the day.

There was a field of Can Am cars as a support race to the Melbourne GP one year (There was one of the Shaddow cars in there too). I thought that race was better than the main event. The sound they made was incredible. F1 is just loud and painful but these were glorious to hear.

Cheers

Canam

I've not seen too many pics of these guys driving with arm restraints but it looks like this fella is.... interesting!

My favorite cars of all time. My dad took me to Riverside California in 1967 for the Can Am race. I sat on the side of a hill and watched that race. It started a love affair with cars for me.
