CV Joint Bands
Howdy Folks,
I was asked by a member about how the CV joint banding tool works seen in a couple of my pics so below is a few pics for any interested folk. The tool I bought was off ebay and came with 10 sets of stainless steel bands. CV Joint Banding Tool With Cutter & 10 Pairs of Clamps | eBay Tool has tensioner and cut off blade built into it. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...21_Custom_.JPG Unwind a band, place it around the boot, and thread the end back through the holder on the band. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...22_Custom_.JPG Insert the end of the band through the slot in the end of the tool, then through the cut off shaft slot, then through the tensioner (winder) slot. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...26_Custom_.JPG Rotate the tensioner until tightened, then rotate the whole tool upwards to bend the band back on itself. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...27_Custom_.JPG Rotate the cutoff shaft which cuts the band to the required length. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...28_Custom_.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...29_Custom_.JPG Push the band end down on itself and fold over the holding tabs, Job done http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...32_Custom_.JPG Rear CV outer boot with SS bands. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...92_Custom_.JPG regards Dave |
I knew that! :o
Thanks Dave Regards. |
Looks just like a mini 'band-it' tool
How cool is that!! |
Great stuff Dave! We need more of these useful how-to posts.
Cheers |
Hi All
One thing to be very careful of when using that tool is that it is very easily over tightened and will cause the band to cut into the boot causing premature failure. (don't ask me how I know) I have one and I think they are a simple to use and great tool. Dimi |
Thanks for that, I always have a habit of over tightening everything!
Regards. |
Also, make sure the 2 surfaces are clean and dry, otherwise it'll slip easily.I've used a tool that stretches the boot over the cv joint, without having to dismantle it. Amazing how much it stretches without splitting. Don't ever use a cv boot with a joint down the centre. Looks like a great idea. You can replace the boot without having to dismantle anything, but I've seen them come apart.

Seems the softer rubber that allows them to stretch isn't up to scratch, particularly on the front outer joints. |
.
Yer, they were very thin. Not like some genuine boots. Messy job. JD |
