Mounting fibreglass to steel frame - insulation?
1 Attachment(s)
I fear this has been done to death but I did a search and couldn’t find a specific thread. I’m about to get serious with mounting the GTO fibreglass body onto the Nissan S30 unibody. I can utilize some of the captive nut locations used for the standard S30 panels but I’m anxious about rigid mounts. Can people provide advice of rubber insulation material and the like (thickness, shore scores, etc) or am I worrying about nothing – again! Do Cobras have a fibreglass-over-steel supports for mounting or are the bodies all fibreglass? Thanks

I just bought some thin rubber strip from 'Clark Rubber' and contact glued it to the top of the chassis rails (square tube ) I think it was about 1.6mm thick and 50mm wide. All it is there for is to stop squeaks and metal-to-glass abrasion. I don't think the latter would be a problem though. My body is just straight fibreglass..no steel inserts. One thing I did do was to put spacers inside the mounting holes. They are a millimeter or so thinner than the piece of fibreglass they are bolting down to allow a bit of "weight" from the bolt to go onto the glass without crushing it. I used large washers as well.
