LS1 v LS6 starter motor

I have very limited clearance between the starter motor and the extractors (headers). I read somewhere that the LS6 starter was a better fit, i.e. smaller. Is this true? Thanks.

(edit) I have since found this - http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/sho....php?p=1314161 see post 404.

Does anyone know if different starter motors were fitted in Oz?

I will go out on a limb here and say that there is no difference.
The LS6 was just a hotter version of the LS1.
The LS6 had better heads, more compression, internally the block was a bit different, a slightly larger cam, bigger injectors and the LS6 manifold.
The LS6 intake later became standard on all LS1s.

Could have been different but I doubt it. Just had a flick through a couple of books and neither meantion a different starter.

Maybe the truck starters are different?

I think that thread said something about the "6lt", not the LS6? I did a quick search and MSD do a smaller starter.

Liam if it's for your LS3 I think 6.0LT (L76, L98 etc) and LS3 both use a different starter to LS1/LS6.

I recently got an LS3 starter from ebay, there's usually a couple floating around on there.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more my starter (from my VZ SS donor) doesn't look like either of the ones shown in the link in post #1.

Sorry, it's not for sale - If I can't find a cheap smaller unit I will probably run it initially and see if a problem actually arises.

I used a holden manaro ( GTO ) for my LS7, I think it might be worth a look on LS1tech.com -

What about those aftermarket compact gear reduction starters - could be another option.
