looking for painted chassis pics
Hi All,
I am stripping my chassis back to repaint it. When i originally painted i used POR-15 as an undercoat and then base and clear over that. The base coat didnt stick to the pro-15 properly and chips easy. I was going to leave it as is, but its been in the back of my mind ever since and i cant handle it not being perfect. It will put me back 2 weeks, but that isnt much in the scheme of things. I am trying to decide if i should repaint it again with base and clear, this time using etch primer, or if i should just do it with black POR-15. I really like the look of it painted body colour, but it is really difficult to spray all the nook and crannys as apposed to just paint the POR-15. I would appreciate if you can post some pics of your completed and painted chassis to help me decide. Cheers. |
I dont have any pics on me where I am, but I will say that my chassis is painted in polyurethane and is very smooth and a way way tough finish. I dont know how this compares to POR-15, but I am happy with it!

There are more in my gallery, this is Black Powder Coating, no regrets. |
I also had black powder coating, as is standard on the Harrisons. No probs with chipping over the last 3 years.

I sprayed it without any trouble. I think my gallery has a few pics of the frame. |
Liam, is your body off or can it be easily removed? I'd just media blast the whole lot and repaint in chassis black. Much easier to touch up if you decide to modify or (heaven forbid) do any serious damage.
My powder coated chassis looked terrific on delivery but it dulls pretty quickly and isn't easily touched up. |
Thanks guys,
Doug, how has your paint held up? I want to do it again with body colour as it looked nice how i had it, but i also want it to last longer than the first drive. I have painted all the under side of the body and wheel wells with stone deadener over coated with gloss por 15. This will take most of the abuse from stone chips. Liam. |

Have only done around 6ooo km's but all good so far. Have not noticed any chips at this stage. Having the firewall painted the same colour (rather than black) certainly lifts the appearance when the bonnet is open. There was also the option of painting only the front 1/2 in colour and leaving the rear in black as you cannot see too much of the rear. With full chasis painted it does look impressive when up on a hoist. Sambo is right, black would be easier to touch up after a scrape. However I figure that if I have a bingle big enough to worry the paint on the chasis the insurance company will have to foot the bill to reinstate the car to its prior state. Doug |
Don't think I have pics handy but did mine with Por15 using a brush and in the shed. A little dusted but the finish is actual quite ok. Used this paint so I could touch the chassis up easier if I needed to.
On the way home right now from OS and hope to get started on the cobra in the next week or so with luck! |
