Not a Cobra

All

Well, it is not a Cobra but it does make a great stablemate. Picked this up recently and am stoked to have finally found the sort of vehicle I have been looking for for a few years.

Plan is to tidy it up and drive it for a while (few years maybe) while collecting parts and ideas for a complete rebuild. Not sure what the final product will look like - so many options.

Interestingly, driving through central NSW to pick it up was a bit like Boxhead's trips out of Alice. A lot of cars just lying around, many of which just looked like they ran out of fuel in the bottom paddock and subsequently abandoned.

Nice one Geof. Who doesn't like a yellow muscle car...? ;)

Good effort to drive it home that distance too!

Awesome - my all time favourite Aussie car! I had a gunmetal HT GTS (161) that we converted to a 350 Chev. The early Monaro has so much street presence. Memories...

Yes, some similarities to another yellow beast. Didn't drive it home though. Bit risky. Had it on a trailer.

Nice.

I would be trying to keep it as original as possible. Will continue to increase in value.

Looks good. You should have brought it up to the Christmas dinner Geof!

Very nice Geof, looks like a 307 auto. I'm not a Holden guy, but have a soft spot for these HK's. Had one with a hot 350 and 2speed glide when i was 18. Was originally a Silver Mink 307 but some dill had painted it white.

Geof,

One of my top 3 Holdens ( the other two are the 2 door A9X and the VL

STIFFY, funny, these are the same three for me, I reckon. Although I am partial to a tidy EH.

Zedn, car was originally a 161 three on the tree in Ermine White over Goya Red interior (colour combo I really like). Only original parts now are the shell and passenger's door. This is really what I have been looking for because (a) I don't want to pay big dollars for the privilege of having a factory paint job and (b) I would like to rebuild the car in a format that I want, regardless of the original tags. If I did pick up an original, I guarantee I wouldn’t be changing it. At this stage, I am thinking of going back to the white/red combo but keep all the GTS bits. I suppose if I am happy with a replica Cobra, a replica GTS should be OK.

Yes, it is (now) a 307 with Powerglide. Goes OK for a 44 year old bus.

Geof, I know the HK didn't have it, but would you consider the HT/HG GTS bonnet? The twin scoops are subtle but really finish it off in my opinion. Although it might interfere with the HK's offset racing stripe if you plan on keeping it?

I was just looking on eBay at Monaro parts - gee I wish all that repro stuff was around 10 years ago. All you could get back then was the rubber kit and it was a pretty average fit.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought of the twin scoop bonnet but do really like them. Very tuff looking. Could be an option.

I am absolutely amazed at the support for these things now. Loads of parts are available off the shelf as NOS or repros. There are a few companies that are working at this, not just Rares. Could be an expensive build but it will look the part.

I'd be dropping an LS1 and 6 speed in it or the 4L60E auto like Gav is running. Great performance with good economy and drivability. It'd be a dead easy swap.

Cheers

Love the new car Geof.

Sweet Monaro, and being a base pov pack, it is a great car to modify and change up to suit your needs.

Let me know what bits you may need that are hard to find, I know a guy who had a few.
He does also have plenty of twin scoop bonnets.

07cob 11-28-2012 01:47 PM

Mike, the LS1 option is one I have looked at and will definately consider. I have even thought of picking up a complete LS1 Commodore and transplanting the whole drive train. Might be a bit challenging for me though. I know my limits.

Tenrocca, if I can make my Munro look half as good as that Torana, I will be very happy.

Boxhead, thanks for the offer. I will certainly be keeping that in mind. Indeed, the fact that this is a tarted up base model is the reason I picked it up. No one will be too concerned if I don't find the matching numbers 161 and stick it back in.

Cheers
