oil leak 302 windsor
Hi All
I hope someone can help me out I have an oil leak that I cannot find the source, a pool of oil sits under what appears to be a mount of some sort on the engine block drivers side just under number 1 cylinder I have attached an image which hopefully has been uploaded otherwise it is still in my gallery with a red line showing the area. At a guess, I would think it is comming from somewhere higher and dripping off that end point.

Recheck that inlet manifold...I had a leak from the rear that only showed up on the front of the engine. You couldn't see its track along the edge of the gasket.

Dipstick tube?...Dipstick not pushing all the way down ? overflowing and running down ?...

The dipstick tube is all dry and is mounted in the Timing Cover which also has no signs of oil.
My guess was the intake even though I cannot see any signs of a leak I will check again, especially along the edge between the head and block, but the oil is only on the bottom of this mount there is no signs of oil on the top or round it, The engine painted black so it is a little harder to pick up. |
I was thinking more along the lines of an engine swap but if you want to fix it that might work too.

I new what you meant, but I now have a little more invested in this motor (347) so I will have to stick to the blue oval |

Its the original motor only had done about 5K but the last time I was at Goulburn in Nov on a track day I bent a valve and it damaged the top of the piston, so I decided to put in a stroker kit, the funny thing is I had the same oil leak problem then, still not enough to drip on the ground. I was hoping new gaskets etc would of rid me of the problem.

I have seen several engine blocks over the past few years with porosity issues.
A buddy of mine had a 572 alloy BB chev built and it oozed oil from all over the place. The block was impregnated with resin to fill the voids. I would clean the block with a solvent (carby or brake clean or similar) to rid it of any oil and then either run it or let it sit and see what happens. |
Another thing to check is the accessory bolts where the go into the heads etc. I had a mystery oil leak on a car and even the dealer couldn't find it. I went investigating and found one of the bolt holes where an accessory bolted on. When it was drilled had gone all the way through the casting into the rocker box. Oil was wicking out along the thread and running down the block. I fixed it with some thread sealant and a copper washer on the bolt.

You maybe onto to something there from memory it has only appeared after I fitted the alloy heads definatley worth checking |
I think Gav is onto something, as the LS engines don't have oil leak issues, that's because all the oil is usually on the track:LOL:
