Dry Lakes Racers Australia

Went up to Lake Gairdner here in South Australia as the annual Speed Week event was held by the DLRA from monday to friday. Well I had to go and have a look as its in our backyard and this year the lake was bone dry (been wet the last two years).
400 km on tar and 150km of dirt didnt stop 300 entrants and about 1000 beer drinking happy campers enjoying the friendly flies and 35 deg heat. People come to see a rock in the middle of the desert but that cant compare to a flat white lake that is bigger than the eye can see.
The salt is so hard they use battery drills to drive self tapping roofing screws in to hold the tarps that are required under each vehicle.
Entries ranged from 110cc postal bike (81mph) VW beetle (124) F100 p/up (184) Kombi VW (117) Lexus/Mx5 (180) E type (145) etc. Special mention is 68 monaro 200mph 50 R190 international prime mover (145) and a VS dunnydore named Bronze Aussie 209 and 250. Times are subject to confirmation/classes. Sorry no photos from me (too busy talking and looking)
Website Dry Lakes Racers Australia - Home Page will have pics posted soon.

Yes sounds like a great event.

I have been following the exploits and crashes of Rod Hadfield and Norm Longfield for years. Both colorful characters.

Particularly Norm with his BiG Knob Racing - should be Big Balls Racing..

Steve and John

Yes records broken, John fastest vw beetle with 36hp, Steve with his kombi the roo shooter, Type 4 scat split heads, and some big balls.

Was asked to go but sounds like just getting there would kill me.

I have a mate from Alice who was pit crew for a Bike team.
They struggled at 196Mph until an American crew came over and told him to change his riding poistion, taped up his gloves and pants, made 209Mph then, they are stoked.
He is taking his bike next year and was telling me I should go with the Cobra.

The speeds they are talking, scared me.

Posty bike would have been a wild ride!

I wonder what the fastest speed will be on the West Wyalong airport runway this year...!!!

Phill getting there is half the fun, nothing like meeting a coaster bus in the middle of the corrugations with a grey nomad at the wheel and more dust than a sandstorm. The stock grids are fun at speed as there is allways a jumpup and they are only 10 ft wide. Saw the patina (rust?) on the kombi and imediately wondered if yours would be there. As for Craig 750hp, who goes to WW aiport these days other than the one daily flight??
Watched NASCAR sprints on telly today and the leading car driven by a woman was lapping at 190mph. Geeeez they dont even need a salt lake!!!

Looks like the NSW club is planning something. From their website;
