Rob,

I'd say your Purple and large black are the pump (+ & -) and the pink and small black/yellow are the fuel gauge.

What car is the pump/sender from?

yep yr right

purple is power to pump

thick black is ground for pump

thin black yellow is ground for gauge join it to black

its not pink its tan colour and this is signal to fuel level gauge

sounds like a vy vz pump assembly so did u get the fuel level gauge to match the sender in the holden pump assembly

I concur,
Sideshow, do you know if an aftermarket fuel gauge will work with the VE built in pump fuel level sender?

most gauge makers make about 4 or 5 different resistances in the gauges

u need to get the 2 sender wires
hook up and ohm meter and find out what ohms are at empty and at full
then get gauges to suit
gm is normally 40 ohms to 240 ohms or similar
vy fuel senders changed half way thru so best to just check with ohm meter

hey Dave
id have 07 ve info but its 4000 page pdf so will take ages to find where specs
and to be exact its easier to just find ohms for empty and full and then find gauge
you like then see if it has the correct specs

80% of cobras and show cars i wire up normally have wrong fuel gauge because custoemr buys gauge before they buy sender

VE pump/sender 4 wires as follows:

Grey - pump positive
Black - pump ground.
Purple - sender to ECM
Brown/Yellow - sender ground to ECM

Both Primary and secondary senders should measure 40 ohms full, greater than 119 ohms empty.

By pure coincidence, 119 ohms for each sender is near enough half of the old value for single sender vehicles, VZ and earlier. And yet they each have a separate input to the ECM.

In VE, the ECM calculates an average of the TWO sender values, then commands the fuel gauge in the IPC.

if its a flat plug with 4 wires in a row then its a vy vz unit
if its a D shaped plug then its a vz ute or ve plug

strange that they have seperate input to ecu
i thought early ve ecus only had one fuel signal wire
might have to read thru my workshop manual

Dave, my speed hut fuel gauge would probably work. It is programmed to the sender by pushing a button at and empty and pushing the button at full. It then calibrates itself.

u would also think there would be two sendef signal wires on fuel senderr plug
so,e new style gauges are pretty adjustable and easy to work with
just expensive and hard to find matchng sets

yes guys its a vy pump/ sender unit straight from holden
i have a vdo gauge so .ill try the ohm meter to find out the low to full differance
then see what the gauge needs.. still haven't pulled it out of the box yet!! but thanks for the wiring confermation

if u havnt opened the vdo fuel gauge then leave it in box
if u goto vdo website or whoever sells vdo gauges there is afew vdo fuel gauges to choose from and not all styles have all the everyday resistances for most car makers

early vy had something like 40 empty and 240 full
late ve vz had 240 empty and 40 full
or the other way around
if u do have the wrong way round for what the gauge is then u can dodgey something up in the fuel sender
ive done it before in an eh with ls1 engine and vy dash and the dash was late and sender was early
the most common vdo fuel sensder resistance is something around 110 ohms this is so they can sell u the matching vdo sender
what is the part number of the vdo gauge ill tell u if theres any chance it might work

Hi All
Just reading the destructions with my Speed Hut gauges,
Factory default settings for the fuel gauge are
240 Ohms empty
33 Ohms full
no calibration needed with senders with these values.
Stan.

just remembered that i think ve commodores run 2 seperate sender units
one each side fo the tank so gary is right
ill have to see if they have seperate wires into ecu

but if u r running just one sender unit then hopefully the readings will be correct
also i dont hear fo many guys running the ve fuel pump assembly as they are hard to get the connect for if u buy it new
i have new connectors and terminals for the vy vz fuel pump assembly but very hard to find the ve style plug

Looks like wrong gauge. Can't find that exact part number on google
Might be 3 to 180 ohm

Ill ring my instrument guy tomorrow

I run 2b&s. battery cable t
From batt to starter
I run 150 amp for alternator. Think its 4 b&s

6 mm is only 50 amps. To low for alternator
I use trailer wiring for rear lights. 2mm by 7 core is fine for rear
Front end I use 4mm

Default VE commodore fuel sender info

Hi,

Gaz64 mentions some detail re the dual sender setup on the VE commodore gauges.
but says
Purple is sender to ECM
&
Brown is sender gnd to ECM..
however as there are 2 senders involved.. and he mentions the ECM calculates an average of the two....
what/where/which are the wires for the second sender?

Using a different tank and a new single sender.. but can't seem to get the gauge to read correctly via these 2 wires alone..
manual shows
purple = sender primary
blue = sender secondary
brown = sender LO reference

I've tried all sorts of combinations, but can't get it working as expected.
do any of these wires goto Chassis GND perhaps?

I'll keep playing with combinations, but if anyone has some experience detailing exactly how I can get the ECM/gauge to respond correctly to the resistance variance of a single sender and which wires do what.. be much appreciated..
AJ

VE ECM
X1-16 Purple, fuel level Primary.
X1-70 Light Blue, fuel level Secondary.

If you are using a VE ECM, you need two senders.

The inputs are also heavily dampened, so a change in one or both sender resistances does not show straight away.

The ECM also logs DTCs if one sender goes open or short.

Would be easier to use a VZ ECM, one sender.
